Just added to that, Buettner is a guy i have gained alot of respect for...

The tigers have had a few cases where players who are on the downward slide have got injured (ie. Terry Hill) and have been out for a long time, but with Buettner, he had the guts to stand up and say he would take a pay cut for the club because he wasn't giving what he was paid for...

Only if some other players would take note.. Yes you MR HILL...

Lyon set for NRL comeback...but who with? Aug 05, 2004

Former Parramatta Eel centre Jamie Lyon is set to return to the National Rugby League next season, with three clubs in the hunt for his signature.
Lyon walked out on the Eels earlier this year after struggling to come to terms with life in the big smoke.

The former Australian representative returned to his hometown of Wee Waa in country NSW, and has been playing Group 4 for the Panthers.

Speculation has been rife that Lyon would return to the national competition with the Manly club, due to his close friendship with Eagles great Noel Cleal.

Cleal is the current Recruitment and Development officer for the Eagles, and held the same position with the Eels, where he recruited Jamie Lyon.

However Parramatta chief executive Dennis Fitzgerald has insisted that Lyon is still contracted to Parramatta and he would not be released to the Eagles.

He did however indicate that he would field offers from other clubs, prompting Manly CEO Paul Cummings to question the decision as a restraint of trade.

Cummings said yesterday he had spoken to NRL chief executive David Gallop about the matter. Although the club would not be taking legal action, he did indicate his club could afford Lyon without breaching their salary cap.

Lyon has been linked with both the Penrith Panthers and the Canberra Raiders, although both clubs are near or close to their salary cap, and would struggle to fit a player of Lyon’s class under their budgets.

Other clubs rumoured to be in the hunt include the West Tigers and St George Illawarra.

NRL chief David Gallop has indicated that Lyon is still under contract with the Eels and rival clubs should respect the sanctity of that contract.

“Because Jamie Lyon is under contract to Parramatta, they can impose any restrictions they wish on him playing. It is important for players and clubs to respect the sanctity of contracts," said Gallop.

If Parramatta do decide to release Lyon, he will become one of the hottest properties on the open market, although they seem hesitant to do so.

Why aren't Parramatta keeping him? He is still under contract with them, it must be a case of not wanting him back (which would seem ridiculous) or he doesn't want to play for them. Lyon has always been over-rated anyhow.

Mate he hates Brian Smith..
No matter what is said, most of that team doesn't like him, Crucher Cleal was the man who kept the harmony there and now he's gone things have gone to ****..

Parra were stupid to extend Smith's contract so much so soon... they are regreting it now i bet..

Apparently the Tigers have been talking to Melbourne youngster Steve Turner..

This guy has HUGE raps and moved to melbourne to get a shot but hasn't.. He has shown in a couple of games what he could do and i would be extremely happy if he came to the tigers..
I will get angry if Melbourne are dumb enough to release him and I don't see much point (unless you are forced to) in releasing somebody mid-contract as you still have to pay them.

But in saying that there isn't a spot available at the moment, and that is the case with Melbourne as an outside back, there is plenty of depth there. Scott Hill is out of tonight's game, and if Matt Geyer moves to 5/8, Turner might be a late inclusion or Cooper Cronk or Dustin Cooper, one of them may come in.

Why? He was useless before the King Hit, what will change his status after it?

Tigers snatch a young Waratah or two

After losing a number of high-profile players to rugby union in recent years, rugby league struck back yesterday with at least one, and possibly two, of the NSW Waratahs' most promising young players heading for the NRL's Wests Tigers.

Eastern Suburbs captain and openside Tim McGann, who started at No.7 for NSW in their past two matches, earning his first two state caps, has agreed to terms for a two-year contract with the Tigers after being sounded out by their coach, Tim Sheens. It is believed Sheens had his eye on the 23-year-old back-rower for some time this year, viewing his tireless effort in a badly beaten side when NSW succumbed 68-21 to the Pacific Islanders in June.

McGann backed up the next day to turn in another outstanding performance for Easts in defeating Sydney University, and soon after the Tigers approached him with a formal offer.

The NSWRU and the ARU were keen to retain the breakaway's services but were unable to match the offer and McGann decided to make the move.

"I'm looking forward to being able to train in that professional environment, being a part of that professionalism," McGann said. "But for now I'm definitely keen to finish on a high note with Easts, who've looked after me for so many years."

A former Australian Schoolboy, McGann is a dominant force in the Sydney premiership and a talented footballer with leadership qualities. He captained his team to the Shute Shield title last year.

With the Tigers losing stalwart forwards Darren Senter and Scott Sattler after this season, McGann could be earmarked to fill the No.13 jersey, though he may not be entirely lost to union - there is an option to review his situation in the second year of the contract if Australia gains an extra Super 12 team.

Sheens and the Tigers are also believed to have approached another former Australian Schoolboy player attached to the Waratahs: Sydney University's Jarrod Saffy.

Saffy, 19, was a standout schoolboy player who captained Sydney University's colts team to a title before playing his way into the first-grade side this season.

The opportunity to sign with the Tigers could prove too tempting compared to the relatively limited opportunities in union.

McGann and Saffy are sidelined with hamstring injuries and will not play this weekend. McGann is keen to watch his side take on Gordon at Chatswood.

A former NRL first-grader is likely to appear in Randwick's lower grades. Former Dragons, South Sydney and Eels winger Wise Kativerata was unable to secure a visa to play for Widnes in the UK and will turn out for the Galloping Greens.

Manly will be without powerhouse centre Nathan Grey for their clash with Saffy's teammates at University Oval, while Penrith have made three changes, including both props, for their match with Eastwood at Nepean Rugby Park.

Wales coach Mike Ruddock and his assistant, former Emus coach Scott Johnson, who handled Penrith for their match against Easts last weekend, were last night scheduled to return to Penrith and train the team.

They are not expected to run the team tomorrow, however, with back-rower Henry Schaff assuming a captain-coach role, assisted by rugby identity Peter Fenton. With six matches remaining in Penrith's season, the NSWRU has pledged to assist in coaching the team as the club searches for a new coach for the 2005 season.

Australia under 19s coach Scott Wisemantel trained the team on Tuesday night.
