After losing a number of high-profile players to rugby union in recent years, rugby league struck back yesterday with at least one, and possibly two, of the NSW Waratahs' most promising young players heading for the NRL's Wests Tigers.
Eastern Suburbs captain and openside Tim McGann, who started at No.7 for NSW in their past two matches, earning his first two state caps, has agreed to terms for a two-year contract with the Tigers after being sounded out by their coach, Tim Sheens. It is believed Sheens had his eye on the 23-year-old back-rower for some time this year, viewing his tireless effort in a badly beaten side when NSW succumbed 68-21 to the Pacific Islanders in June.
McGann backed up the next day to turn in another outstanding performance for Easts in defeating Sydney University, and soon after the Tigers approached him with a formal offer.
The NSWRU and the ARU were keen to retain the breakaway's services but were unable to match the offer and McGann decided to make the move.
"I'm looking forward to being able to train in that professional environment, being a part of that professionalism," McGann said. "But for now I'm definitely keen to finish on a high note with Easts, who've looked after me for so many years."

A former Australian Schoolboy, McGann is a dominant force in the Sydney premiership and a talented footballer with leadership qualities. He captained his team to the Shute Shield title last year.
With the Tigers losing stalwart forwards Darren Senter and Scott Sattler after this season, McGann could be earmarked to fill the No.13 jersey, though he may not be entirely lost to union - there is an option to review his situation in the second year of the contract if Australia gains an extra Super 12 team.
Sheens and the Tigers are also believed to have approached another former Australian Schoolboy player attached to the Waratahs: Sydney University's Jarrod Saffy.
Saffy, 19, was a standout schoolboy player who captained Sydney University's colts team to a title before playing his way into the first-grade side this season.
The opportunity to sign with the Tigers could prove too tempting compared to the relatively limited opportunities in union.
McGann and Saffy are sidelined with hamstring injuries and will not play this weekend. McGann is keen to watch his side take on Gordon at Chatswood.
A former NRL first-grader is likely to appear in Randwick's lower grades. Former Dragons, South Sydney and Eels winger Wise Kativerata was unable to secure a visa to play for Widnes in the UK and will turn out for the Galloping Greens.
Manly will be without powerhouse centre Nathan Grey for their clash with Saffy's teammates at University Oval, while Penrith have made three changes, including both props, for their match with Eastwood at Nepean Rugby Park.
Wales coach Mike Ruddock and his assistant, former Emus coach Scott Johnson, who handled Penrith for their match against Easts last weekend, were last night scheduled to return to Penrith and train the team.
They are not expected to run the team tomorrow, however, with back-rower Henry Schaff assuming a captain-coach role, assisted by rugby identity Peter Fenton. With six matches remaining in Penrith's season, the NSWRU has pledged to assist in coaching the team as the club searches for a new coach for the 2005 season.
Australia under 19s coach Scott Wisemantel trained the team on Tuesday night.
