After a first up loss to the Panthers, the Scorpions will be looking to triumph over a Bulldogs side that got up over the Raiders last week. The game certainly started well for the Scorpions, after a huge hit from Garven knocked the ball from Willie Tonga's grasp 20m out from the Bulldogs line 5mins into the game. After a strong defensive showing by the Bulldogs, who held out 5 tackles, they were undone by when Dobson shaped to kick but instead passed onto Wright, who drifted across field, threw a 2nd man pass behind Murphy to young James Stedman in the centres, who exposed a 2 on 1 with Matt Utai to put Dela Cruz over for an easy 4 pointer. It was a well worked move, particularly well orchestrated from pivot Wright, who made his return from injury this week. Dobson started well with the boot, potting the sideline conversion attempt. The Scorpions looked to be in trouble when big Willie Mason busted through Jellet and Burke and thundered up to fullback Goff, who tried to go low in the tackle and was trampled for his trouble. A certain try was bombed when Nayak came across in cover defence, forcing Mason to offload to centre Lolesi, who knocked on with the try line beckoning. A rushing Scorpion defensive line was then called offside, allowing the Bulldogs their first points, through the boot of Brent Sherwin, bringing the scores back to 6-2.
24th minute and the Bulldogs had scored. Utai, with space down the touchline, zipped past Dela Cruz, catching the Scorpions napping on the first tackle. Sherwin had no troubles with the conversion, 6-8 to the Bulldogs. The Scorpions then suffered a major blow when captain Nathan Hoy was replaced in the 25th minute by Reuben Thomas. It appeared as though Hoy sustained an ankle injury in a tackle, and took no further part in the match.
2nd half, and the Scorpions had a try disallowed by the video ref in the 1st minute back after the break. It was to no consequence, as 3 minutes later Darren Murphy showed great strength to crash over the try line from 5m out. 12-8 to the Scorpions. Dobson scored a penalty goal before Corey Hughes of the Bulldogs slipped though Dobson's tackle and scored. Sherwins conversion attempt was wide of the uprights, and the Scorpions retained the lead at 14-12. From there, the Scorpions dominated the rest of the match. Robertinho Dela Cruz, who had a great battle with Utai on the wing all night, got the best of his opponent after burning him on the outside with sheer pace, then finding fullback Goff in support on the inside to allow him to score under the posts. Dobson then kicked a penalty goal to seal the match for the Scorpions 22-12. It was a polished effort from the Scorpions, with their speedy backline capitalising on some great work from their forwards. MOTM Dela Cruz had this to say to Matt Johns when asked how he felt about the Scorpions first win of the season:
"Feels f***ing great mate!"
