The solid start that the Scorpions would have wanted for this season was spoilt on their 4th use of the ball, when 5/8 Darren "The Man" Murphy knocked on, giving the Panthers possesion in good field position, 40m out from their own line. Further Scorpion knock-ons and a foolish penalty given away for obstruction after a great Fitzsimmons run, allowed Penrith into the Scorpion half and over the line in the 11th minute. Preston Campbell had no problems with the conversion, putting them up 6-0. The Panthers were in again, as sloppy ball control by the Scorpions and lacklustre defence allowed centre Paul Franze to shrug off two tackles before unloading to Rhys Wesser who scored untouched beneath the posts. This seemed to lift the Scorpions, when barely 2 mins later, Fitzsimmons touched down after a bustling run by fullback Goff. The two showed great communication in attack, a sign of their many years of playing junior footy together. Dobson missed the conversion from out wide and the score was 12-4. 22nd minute and the Scorpions had bounced back again. A great break down the sideline by pacey winger Gaurav Nayak had the Panthers defence scrambling, which allowed slick work by the Scorpion halves to transfer the ball onto 2nd rower Stephen Burke's chest, who hit the hole and was rewarded with a 4-pointer. This time Dobson converted to peg the gap back to 2.
However, that was the extent of the joy for the Scorpion side, as poor handling and ildiscipline let the side down. Preston Campbell potted 2 penalty goals after halftime to seal the 16-10 victory for the home side in the opening clash of the season.
