New Zealand's New Hall of Fame

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Interesting new Hall of Fame for New Zealand cricket being launched at the upcoming test:

"The “First Eleven” features Bert Sutcliffe, John Reid, Jackie Lord, Trish McKelvey, Glenn Turner, Sir Richard Hadlee, Debbie Hockley, Martin Crowe, Emily Drumm, Daniel Vettori, and McCullum. The 11 have been honoured with an exhibit featuring near life-size portraits with video and biographical content displayed on a digital touchscreen."

I'm assuming that's John R Reid - but it's not as if F was anything other than a decent cricketer either.

So, for the Men's team, we have: Bert Sutcliffe, John ® Reid, Glenn Turner, Martin Crowe, Richard Hadlee, Dan Vettori, Brendan McCullum
Women's team: Jackie Lord, Trish McKelvey, Debbie Hockley, Emily Drumm

Many potential selections in the women's team are still playing (Bates, Devine, Kerr) and I guess the names I'd remember who haven't been selected would be your Rebecca Rolls, Haidee Tiffen, Amy Satterthwaite. Hockley would be the first name on the list though.

The men though, so many options below Crowe and Hadlee. Sutcliffe and Reid are understandable.

I think they've set eligibility at five years of retirement, so Taylor's still a bit short of that.

McCullum's inclusion is eyeroll inducing. Yes, he should always be thanked for helping to build a winning team culture where NZ cricketers finally learned to put performance before their own egos. But the guy finished with a totally unremarkable batting record. Asides from his annus mirabilis in 2014, and his 2015 WC pinch hitting, he achieved very little of note.

Likes of Geoff Howarth, Bruce Taylor, Jeremy Coney, Stephen Fleming must have been close.

Don't really agree, with the eyerolling part.

Cant really think of another candidate who isn't equally 'flawed'. Or career too short.

McCullum is statistically top few keepers, top 5 test opener, top few middle order bats. Plus then add captaincy , and white ball stuff.

Yes he underperformed the first 2/3rds of his career. But so did Flem, Cairns, Coney. Other closest contenders I'd say for that final mens' spot.

Bruce Taylor maybe?

Martin Donnelly, Stewie Dempster, Jack Cowie

Andrew Jones? John Wright?
Perhaps Bond for ODIs?
Watling?

Don't see why this should be a factor. The likes of Donnelly and Cowie absolutely belong in an NZ hall of fame.

I agree they belong in an nz hall of fame And assume they will. But the criteria is post war, and their careers spanned the war. So their bodies of work are even smaller in Donnelly's case now a single tour.

Really? The only criteria I've seen listed on the NZC website or the media are played for NZ and retired for at least 5 years.

I think Taylor should definitely be there. Incredible all-rounder. I didn't realise he is the only player to get a 5 wicket bag and a century on test debut. I did know he held the record for fastest NZ test century several decades until Vettori beat his 83 ball record.

I can't remember which outlet reported it but I did read that a player had to "theoretically" make a World XI at some point in their career.

Vettori literally made the World XI for that one Test. I can't remember what was happening at McCullums peak but when he scored his triple he was probably in form enough to make the XI.

I suspect B Taylor will be worked in a bit later when there's less fanfare. Probably not ideal to have a convicted fraudster in the first induction.
