****'s sake. I'd go and see Afghanistan, but I'm not going to Mount Maunganui for the privilege. Throw the Basin Reserve a ****ing bone you useless conniving ****s.
Would have more than a little bit to do with the BOP climate and the ability to play cricket on a decent deck in early October, yes? Hence why SA are playing there.

If you want to travel a shorter distance to see Afghanistan's card school in the Long Room, by all means drop NZC a line

Pah. There's some lovely days for cricket in Wellington in October.

Just as much chance of interruption and crap decks in Hamilton in October, but the ND region gets 6 matches.

Hamilton: Average days of precipitation in October: 11.7, (11.7 in September)
Wellington: Average days of precipitation in October: 12.1 (10.6 in September)

lol come on bro you know that's not true
If you like [very] slow and [very] low pitches, then October's a lovely time for cricket in Wellington. Just as it is in Hamilton.

I somehow suspect that curators at the Basin and Seddon Park put on a bit of a better showing than the council contractors at the grounds I play on though. :p

Mt Maunganui is not in Hamilton.
Yeah..not sure why Hamilton got a run there.

I'm not bashing Wellington, I love the place. But mates who have played/play club cricket in October, it's more 'let's see if we get a game in' than 'let's get in a high-quality match' in due to conditions. The Mount can produce better-paced wickets at that time of year, even if the chance of it raining on that particular day is similar. I imagine the powers-that-be that make these decisions do so with Kim Littlejohn-esque spreadsheets and figures at the ready.

Bay Oval is a great place to watch cricket.

Yes, but Hamilton has two additional games. Not sure of the quality of Rangiora wickets/weather at that time of year but the argument is void if they are happy to play games in Hamilton in October. And I'd be quite keen to watch cricket at Mount Maunganui, but getting 4 games and, in all likelihood, no one to watch them sees a bit off. At least if a game was in Wellington, rain or shine, then I'd have been happy to trot along and watch whichever Associate came along.

Plus, it'd give the touring Associates experience of a variety of conditions. See how they cope with bowling into a wild Wellington Southerly. It'd be great.

The 15th player will be announced on Friday August 8, and JP has already indicated that it won't, as you might have assumed, be a wicketkeeper.

"But one thing's for sure and that is when the game starts, we will have a wicketkeeper!' - says JP, who has lost former young charge Cameron Fletcher to Canterbury.

Fletcher missed most of last season for the Knights with a broken bone in his hand anyway, and in one respect that has turned out to be 'handy'(sorry) since it has already given JP a chance to introduce Northland keeper Rory Christopherson to top domestic cricket.

New Zealand Under-19s graduate Tim Seifert is another young keeper keen to make his way up.

A further prospect in fellow recent New Zealand Under-19s cap Benjamin (Ben) Horne has moved from Parnell CC and the Auckland A squad into our Counties Manukau region, and Peter Bocock - who produced consistent and dominant performances for Hamilton in District Association cricket last season, represented ND A in one day cricket in February.

They should all be guys in line for Knights wicketkeeping opportunities in 2014/15.

Says JP, "I spoke to all of the contenders (for the back-up keeper spot to Blackcap BJ Watling) so it's no secret that we feel none of them have achieved a level where they could be rewarded with a contract - yet.

All a bit dull really. I wonder if any teams actually tried to look to other provinces for these last contracts?

15 is a lot of contracts to hand out, it is quite possible that Guptill-Bunce will get no game time this year. Given the "depth" of batting on the contracted list.

It's not dull at all - Matt Taylor comes from my club. This is big news. He can bowl 130ks but is a top order bat.

In the nets he treats each ball on its merits even when facing me.

Hope he does well.

I was talking more in terms of the two week wait just for all the teams to announce exactly the person they would've chosen if they'd had to pick 15 all in one go. I understand that the extra couple of weeks is meant to allow the teams to make sure all the best players in the country get contracted but it just seems a bit contrived and artificial. And probably rough on the guys who miss out first time round.

Obviously for these guys who've just been named it's exciting news. I'm stoked for the guy who got the last Otago contract, he's an absolutely great bloke and has worked really hard to get to this point. Completely deserves his contract.

Cricket: Associations set plans for bright future - Cricket - NZ Herald News

New Zealand Cricket's radical overhaul of domestic cricket is nearly complete, and the six major associations have agreed to initiatives it is hoped will revitalise the game.

The architect of the revamp, NZC's general manager of domestic cricket, David Cooper, has spent the past year trying to win the major associations -- Northern Districts, Auckland, Central Districts, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago -- over to a vision that will "maximise entertainment, high performance and commercial outcomes in our domestic game".

The main points of the revamp are:

• The three formats of the game will be locked into separate windows.

• Associations will be able to sell part of their operation to private or third-party investors.

• There will be an increased focus on promoting and marketing the domestic game.

• Although more self-sufficiency in the associations will be sought, domestic cricket will still be administered by NZ Cricket.

This final point is a departure from the thinking when the plan was presented as a discussion paper. Then, the idea was for a separate company to be set up to run domestic cricket. This was the biggest stumbling block for the associations, which felt NZC was best equipped to deliver the promotion and marketing objectives for the Plunket Shield, Ford Trophy and HRV Cup.

The invitation to third-party investors was initially met with mixed reaction. Some associations, like Canterbury, were poised to bring investors in, while others like Auckland -- whose relationship with the Eden Park Trust gives it competitive advantages without the need for outside capital -- were against it.

NZC has finessed this by saying there is no one-size-fits-all approach. If an association thinks it is ready to attract investors it should, while others might want to "paint the house and tidy the garden" before trying to attract bidders.

The recurring complaint about domestic cricket is that people rarely know it's on. Apart from the T20 HRV Cup, it has little television presence, and the season is a mish-mash of formats.

The new participation agreement -- which effectively separates the professional and amateur strands of the game -- will lock in schedules, possibly for the next four years, in which the four-day Plunket Shield will bookend the season, and the T20 competition will be played before Christmas, followed by the Ford Trophy one-day competition.

In the past, the one-day and four-day competitions have run concurrently, and for the past two years the HRV Cup has been run alongside the four-day competition.

The one-day competition has been at the end of the season because of NZC's desire to end the season with a showpiece 50-over final. But that has been a non-event because a lack of continuity and marketing and advertising spending has resulted in little interest in the competition.

NZC's announcement that it is about to sign a six-year extension with Sky Television is further good news, although some believe that in a rapidly evolving broadcasting landscape, it should not have tied itself for so long to one broadcaster that has shown little appetite for domestic cricket.

But Sky remains the only broadcaster with capacity to cover cricket properly and after strong ratings last season (the Brendon McCullum chase for 300 is understood to be the highest-rating cricket broadcast in New Zealand history), it has paid a premium to lock down the sport.

Disappointed about the 3 separate windows.

I like the Friday night HRV,

Until I see the new calendar ... It would be premature if me to moan, but if we end up with a 3 month gap in the FC calender again then I might just give up.

NZ Cricket need to self publish more content. Take a leaf from other domestic leagues who weren't getting TV coverage and make it available via stream.

Yeah hopefully I'm not left following too much of the domestic cricket this season, health-wise. I was pretty disappointed by the play I watched last year.

These guys like David Cooper with their better entertainment outcomes don't fill me with any confidence of a clever and original renaissance. They'll just hit me with pink paint, and ways to make the corpse look a bit less corpsey.

Or failing that, they should at least stop shutting down those who do that for them...
