New Zealand Off Season 2014

His dad tried to put him on standby, on the off-chance he became useful overnight. You sure won't make that mistake again, New Zealand.

Another out of place comment but since I don't know where else to put it, I'm surprised the New Zealand team of the 60s wasn't more successful given the players they had then. I'm looking through our 1965 tour of India and with everyone fit (I don't think it happened) we could have fielded Collinge, Motz, Cameron, Taylor and Reid as our attack. Plus we had Sutcliffe and J.R. Reid as high quality players in their fields and solid batsmen like Dowling and Congdon.

Howsie/Blocky – guys with ND connections,

Why is Jono Hickey playing First 5 for Grammar Carlton in Auckland club rugby, has he turned his back on cricket?

Edit Grammar TEC claim victory in tense tussle

He is playing half back ftr.
Would have no idea. Te Ahu Davis got in the **** five or six years ago for playing club rugby, I've always been of the assumption that it was written into their contracts about stuff like that. Even if it isn't it's bloody stupid on Hickey's part, could cost him income, a season of cricket etc if he gets hurt.

Edit: Problem with six month contracts I guess.

should have chosen cricket. He has looked out of his depth this year,
Geez that's a touch rough champion. The guy is 20. I thought he was pretty decent. And as much as he was a fine cricketer (2x Gillette Cup player of the tournament in consecutive years) he was/is a much better rugby player.

Can't see a big issue with Jono playing code in the off-season. Adam Milne used to play football, Dush as mentioned played rugby, if they're national contracted sure but life can't go on hold for a domestic contract.

Dija now averaging 19 from 8 innings for Essex. Meanwhile, another day, another decent haul in the county championship for Jeets.

There's a lot more pathways in rugby as well with the ITM cup being around, where a lot of average players can make the grade there or go and play for some rubbish team around the country (North Harbour, Manawatu etc.), where as cricket doesn't have that middle ground competition.

Dare I say if Simon Hickey had chosen cricket, he would most likely be playing club cricket at Howick Pak, so I feel that his decision to play rugby is justified.

Not only that, but one decent domestic season in NZ gives you a lot of options to play European rugby.

Spose it's whether he wants to play for money or trophies. Blues success since 2004: Zero. Howick Pak success since 2004: 5 Akl One-Day Titles, 1 National One-Day Title, 1 Twenty20 title. He'd also have played with more national representatives at Howick than at the Blues. True story.

 C'mon now we've won the Gordon Hunter memorial trophy many times in that period.
