James' figures were about right. The problem up until 2002 (when the players' dispute came into play) was that first-class cricketers were struggling to hold down jobs in which they'd have to give up their summers pretty much full-time to cricket. Needless to say, many cricketers gave up the game due to unsympathetic employers.
Waoh that is some insane money yo !!!!!!!!!! I am wondering what the hell Wasim was doing there ? Holy jeez man he could've made more money in Lahore . Crazy cricketer . I can imagine he must have some other job too like in the restaurant or some thing .... Jeez man I am sitting idle doing nuthin for the past 2 months and still on the monthly average wise I am making more than Wasim ( I've given some property on rent) ......... Cricket has no money in it . And I do not know why .

good bonus for otago to get trott interesting that craig smith was contracted but id say he'll mature into a pretty good bowler hopefully he can end up doing the same s\job shayne o'conner did for us
Good to see the fine tradition of North Otago left-arm bowlers in Otago cricket continuing.

Craig has essentially taken David Sewell's spot, although I think he has the capabilities to be a more consistent bowler. He's not the same pace as Sewelly, but his accuracy and variation are a bit better.

Interesting to see how Hesson will use Smith and Scott, who are pretty similar bowlers.

No real surprises in those team lists. There are a few new additions I haven't heard of, and im hoping at least one of them is a genuine quick..haha.

Not necessarily "regularly" but there's usually one or two floating around every year. Otago, for example, had Neil Mallender play about 10 seaons for them from about 1982-1992, and more recently Matthew Maynard, Mohammed Wasim and Jonathan Trott.
Graeme Hick is another famous player.

What ever happened to David Sewell? Apart from playing one Test almost a decade ago...

He was playing up until the end of last season - retired a couple of months ago. Might play club cricket here in North Otago.

I am always interested in the new young players coming through back home. Don't know much about the new guys but I am dissapointed in some of the selections.

1) Te Ahu Davis didn't get a contract for Northern. He is a genuine quick. Not Lee or Aktar pace but pretty quick.
2) Northern gave a contract to Alun Evans who is a welshman. I saw him play last year and he looked pretty average. If you are going to get an overseas pro then you might as well get a good one, someone that will lift the standard of NZ cricket, like that Trott guy that played for Otago, he was really good, or a Graham Hick type player. There are a couple of good young batsmen in ND who wont get a contract because of a guy who is not eligible for NZ anyway. Seems like a waste of money.

On the plus side
1) Its great to see Ian Butler and Tuffey back. We need as many bowlers as we can get.
2) Auckland's old guard have finally gone (most of them ). Richardson, Horne and Aaron Barnes all retired so we can finally see a bit more young talent in the Auckland region. (strange that a region so big produces so few good cricketers, if they produced cricketers to the same level as Canty then NZ cricket would be much stronger.)
3)A few players have left the CD team and Taylor and Sinclair have NZ contracts so a few more young batsmen have been selected.

The Alun Evans who Glamorgan gave the chop around 5/6 years ago?

I don't know.... I guess so.. He is definitely welsh. And he definitely spells his name Alun, rather than Alan. But thats all I know. He looked around 30ish . Possibly older. He was an older player rather than a younger one so it could be the same guy.

He has. Which is the reason why he got the contract ahead of the likes of Te Ahu Davis and Brad Wilson.

Interesting to see a number of foreign coaches coming in to New Zealand. Wellington announced former Australian one day player Anthony Stuart as their new coach on a 3 year deal. Northern Districts have earlier signed England U19 coach Andy Moles and of course Canterbury signed South African Dave Nosworthy last season.

I can see the benefits of this, but I hope there will still be a path way for NZ coaches.

Ahhh Anthony Stuart the guy everyone mistook Stuart Clark to be when he was called up

What's next, Simon Cook to coach Mumbai? Scott Muller for Harare?

HJH Marshall is in a bit of form, now if only there was an international match tomorrow. His average in the county FC is 74 atm. not bad from 11 innings, as I type he is on 145*

Perhaps this will help the selectors realise where he should bat...

I see charlie Shreck isn't coming back either for Wellington.

Stephen Cunis withdrew himself form contract selection ebcause of work commitments but hope to play a few OD's in the summer where his teaching work is not affected.

and Ian Butler is hoping to convert himself into a batsman.
