Even Modi seems to know next to nothing about that group. Apparently they are a Gulf based consortium and one just wonders there are ulterior motives to pumping in that ridiculous sums of money.

Anyway I am happy, that would mean injection of capital into our system which is great from an Indian perspective.

Have to say the gujrati's will be pretty unhappy with this. Ahemdabad was considered the most wanted city in the bidding ,but it did not turn out that way.

They did not get selected surprisingly when somehow due to shashi tharoor's efforts Kochi did.

Btw,Sahara is saying their emotional choice was Kanpur ,and they chose pune ahead of it and ahmedabad,because the logistics in pune,in terms of govt cooperation,infrastructure and the stadium were way better and the potential market was equal to kanpur ,if not better.
The stadium which is being contructed in pune is considered to be one of the very best in the world.On top of that they also have Ambi valley a few miles away from pune ,which they can utilise and promote along with their team.They also have their airport coming up in Pune.

I think Pune team now owned by Sahara will most likely have Amitabh Bachchan as their Ambassador.

The reason Ahmedabad didn't get a team is because nobody bid for it at such amounts as guys bid for Kochi and Pune. End of.

It might be a small factor, but Gujarat with it's strict civilian laws and prohibition might not exactly appeal to such guys when they are setting up an "cricketainment" group.

That article is not completely accurate.

For a start DLF is paying 50 million dollars for 5 years not each year.There are other discrepancies there too make it look way more optimistic.

To put things into perspective the Punjab Franchise ,that was one of the cheapest at 75 million dollars has still not broken even according to their owner ness wadia himself in this morning's Hindustan times.He said in a interview that they are HOPING to break even from this year onwards.
The only positive for them would be that there have reportedly been interested buyers like Hero Honda and whirlpool williing to pay near 250 to 300 million for their team.


But paying 370 and 330 million for these teams in less attractive cities is even more of a gamble and i really cannot see where the costs will be recouped from.No current team is making so much profits to justify such prices.

The brain behind bringing together the five-member consortium was Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor.

IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi said Tharoor helped Kerala to have a team of its own. Rendezvous Sports bid $333.33 million to get Kochi as the host city while Sahara Adventure Sports was the highest bidder at $370 million to bag Pune.

Great. But bringing together doesn't guarantee them success. In the end they just coughed up more bucks, simple as. Ahmedabad despite everything in it's favor is not exactly a glamourous destination unlike kochi, which offers much more more than just cricket for the visitors.

Personally I don't think the bids are that insane. You're going to get substantially more games in future series, so commercially you're going to get substantially more revenue, that's alongside the usual growth that goes along with something relatively new. As I've mentioned earlier I think it's pretty likely that once the free ways of following the IPL have helped build up the brand and audience it will switch to pay-to-view satellite like Sky or whatever in some countries at least.

What's insane to me is how close Pune is to Mumbai.Holds its own in infrastructure etc wrt other cities and has (or had) a famously different culture from Mumbai, but not a distinct cricket fan base or player catchment area.

Also Kochi. With due respect - cricketing or otherwise - it is a significant notch behind Kanpur and Ahmedabad which would've been my logical expansion choices (given that these are big sized cities and represent strong areas of the country in cricketing terms).

Kings XI and Deccan have set a great precedent in captaincy (Warne @ RR is different). Sreesanth does not have to be captain any more than Yuvi has to. That's not a worry. Pune has even more of a problem in ID'ind a star players (even if non captain) like Yuvi @ KXI and Laxman @ Deccan. Zaheer Khan (originally from Aurangabad which is much closer to Pune than Mumbai, is the only one I can think of, but he plays for Mumbai in domestic competitions too.)
