Yes. It was a tough one. Okay here it is.

Shephard and Dickie Bird are 'peerless' because they are umpires !!

The word umpire came into use around 1362 from its original form nompere meaning peerless, without equal !!

I am sorry for that. :sleep:

But the person who adjudicates in a sport was called peerless (or umpire) because the others (contestants) were each others equals while he was above them and was peerless on the field.

I suppose they did not think we will eventually have a second and a third umpire besides a match referee :p
