This can be answered with a YES or NO answer so this is okay.

But if the question had been ...

Did he play one test or more ? Then it would have been not possible to answer in YES or NO.

Or if it was...

Did he play one test FOR ENGLAND ?

Then it would be ambiguous and you could just warn the questioner that a NO answer may not mean NO to both the implied questions ! It could be one test bot for another country or more than one test for England and the answer would have to be NO.
