Mystery Draft V.2 (1989-2009)

bagapath

International Captain
@ Bagapath: With Jayasuriya, Gilly and Dhoni in the top order, your ODI team will set a cracking pace in the powerplays...
yeah, matt. the first three should play their natural attacking game with the confidence that there are enough batters to last 50 overs even if things go wrong. the next five guys can score decent amount of runs in good time with quick singles and innovative batsmanship. but nos. 1,2 and 3 are capable of tearing apart the opposition bowling.

I'll go now as I'm heading out to a looooooooooooong lunch in a minute, and won't be in any state to post sensibly til tomorrow night :D

Last selection for Tests:
MS Dhoni (Ind)

Last selection for ODIs:
AC Cummins (WI) (he made a brief comeback as a 40yo for Canada but the vast majority of his career was for the WIs

Final teams:
Test:
Andrew Strauss (Eng) 5266 @ 44.62. 18 centuries.
Ross Taylor (NZ) 1343 @ 39.50. 4 centuries.
Younis Khan (Pak) 5260 runs @ 50.09. 16 centuries.
Inzamam ul Haq (Pak) 8830 runs @ 49.60. 25 centuries.
Thilan Samaraweera (SL) 3787 runs @ 51.87. 11 centuries.
MS Dhoni+ (Ind)1962 runs @ 37.73. 1 century.
Dwayne Bravo (WI) 1833 runs @ 32.73. 2 centuries. 70 wickets @ 39.58
Shaun Pollock (SA) 3781 runs @ 32.31, 2 centuries. 421 wickets @ 23.11
Shakib al Hasan (Ban) 715 runs @ 29.79, 48 wickets @ 28.27
Shoiab Akhtar (Pak) 178 wickets @ 25.69
Glenn McGrath (Aus) 563 wickets @ 21.64

ODI:
Nick Knight (Eng) 3637 runs @ 40.41, SR 71.52
Rahul Dravid+ (Ind) 10685 @ 39.42, SR 71.14
Ross Taylor (NZ) 1783 @ 37.14, SR 83.39
Inzamam ul Haq (Pak) 11739 runs @ 39.52, SR 74.24
Mahela Jayawardene (SL) 8355 runs @ 32.13, SR 76.73
Shoaib Malik (Pak) 4858 runs @ 34.70, SR 79.04. 128 wickets @ 36.52, ER 4.56
Lance Klusener (SA) 3576 runs @ 41.1, SR 89.91. 192 wickets @ 29.95, ER: 4.7
Heath Streak (Zim) 2943 runs @ 28.29, SR 73.42. 239 wickets @ 29.82, ER: 4.51
AC Cummins (WI) 78 wickets @ 28.79, ER 4.28 (in his WI career, excluding his very brief return as a 40yo for Canada)
Saqlain Mushtaq (Pak) 288 wickets @ 21.78, ER 4.29
Glenn McGrath (Aus) 381 wikets @ 22.02, ER 3.88

I'm not sure yet about the final batting order for my ODI team, specifically Malik might open, with the others all shuffling down one. Klusener will float in the order anyways, aiming to have him coming in at the 40over mark at least each match....

Reckon Shakib is a better Test bat than Bravo and Pollock

Also am a big fan of that Test team, particularly the attack.

Metallics may make both his selections this turn (since if he made his Sri Lankan ones first he could make his Pakistani ones straight away)

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Michael Vaughan in tests. Do I still need to wait for my ODI pick Athlai?

Somerset XI (Test)
Mark Richardson
Gary Kirsten
Michael Vaughan (c)
Mahela Jaywardene
Andy Flower (wk)
Michael Hussey
VVS Laxman
Daniel Vettori
Shane Bond
Ian Bishop
Shabbir Ahmed

Stengths:
A stonewalling opening pair with Richardson and Kirsten to take the shine off the new ball.
Quality batting right down to number seven with three batsmen averaging more than 50 in test matches.
All three fast bowlers with top records and should complement each other nicely.
Even though I was awarded New Zealand as my team theres no real standout weak player with all three Kiwis excellent test players, and a minnow whos anything but that.

Weaknesses:
Reasonably inexperience pace attack led by Bishop.
Vettori's useful but theres better spinners around with healthier records.
No real fifth bowling option - Mike Hussey or Mahela Jaywardene don't come close to qualifying so Michael Vaughan's our next best.
Laxman at seven might be too low in the order for a player of his status.
