Michael Clarke Vs Doug Walters

Kenneth Viljoen

I have to go with Michael Clarke for biased reasons ,he saved his best performances for South Africa ?..2008-2014 is the peak of South African Test bowling excellence post isolation ..Prime Dale Steyn , Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander , Jacques Kallis ...Clarke smashed 1500 runs @67 on some spicy pitches home and abroad , even on a road he made sure to pummel us .

Nah Kallis was just a batsman who bowled a bit.

Clarke did that because, contrary to his reputation, he was tough as teak as a batsman and accordingly could play fast bowling bouncing above waist height.

Didn't have to bowl a great deal with the fast bowlers he played with , but he was definitely a bowler just that he was so damn good with the bat and a love for good food he didn't want to overextend himself which would have shortened his career. Reason I say this is he could genuinely swing the ball , powerfully built man and for the majority of his career he was bowling medium pace , but when he really bent his back and put some attention into getting the fitness required for Bowling he was reaching speeds of 140-145 even into his mid 30's .. that's genuine evidence of bowling ability let alone the fact he has over 500 international wickets in his career for someone who 'bowled a bit'

I grew up watching Clarke but never got the hype about him. He also seem to be a level below the top dogs of his time. He made some big daddy hundreds on some of the flattest decks of all time. But apart from that i don't remember much of his career.

Clarke's god mode is second only to Lara out of batsmen I've watched. Even more than Viv or Ponting. Was insane when completely on song. Just didn't do it quite enough to be regarded an atg, but when he did the bowling was all the same to him like few others.

Clarke's 151 at Cape Town is still in the shortlist for the most ludicrous innings I've ever seen given the gap between the ease with which he was batting and literally everyone else in the game. Took an ATG-standard attack on a greentop and made it look like a park cricket net session.
