Gauteng just steam rolled Northerns. B Lee getting 7-25 to demolish their batting. B Beresford was the most significant contributor to the runs for Gauteng getting 72. He was ably supported by J Maher his opening partner with 25, M Zaman with 38 and the skipper D Cullinan with 26. Lee had a bit of help from O Cole and L Perera picking up 1 and 2 wickets respectively for 40 runs each.

A very good batting pitch saw an incredible match at Canterbury.

Jamaica were to bat first, amassing a huge 320-8 in the process, a real team effort (top scorer only 72).

Canterbury's reply was very worrying for Jamaica fans, and with their run rate they were easily on target to get it. But Jamaica bowled them out in 41 overs, for 291, Powar taking 3/47 off 9 overs.

Tasmania's rookie manager was again left to rue his poor decisions in the off season as his side were comfortably beaten by a Guyana side fresh from their thrashing of Jamaica in the 4D arena.

Guyana won the toss and chose to bat, and amassed a good total of 278-5, with Jenkins and Ardley starring with the bat, and only Tama Canning gaining any respectable figures.

When Tasmania started their chase Rowell was once again dismissed for a duck. This set the tone for the rest of the innings as the Tigers were dismissed for 168, rookie Nick Charlton top-scoring with 61. The damage with the ball was done by Zulch who took 5-42.

Guyana 5-278 (50)
Z Ardley 79* (64)
J Jenkins 60 (79)
Z McDonald 40* (24)
T Canning 1-31 (9)

Tasmania 168 (37)
N Charlton 61 (83)
T Canning 36 (49)
D Zulch 5-42 (8)
R Perrera 2-23 (7)

Lions destroy luckless Mumbai

Jamee Gray's first game in the Surrey OD arena started off well, getting Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar caught and bowled by captain Mohendra Shrinivas, for just 3. Everyone else kept the board ticking over, getting 20's or 30's but no-one captialised and batted out their 50 overs for just 202-4.

Mumbai started off well in their restricting act, getting Surrey to 11-2: Tewntyman and Denny getting out early. But all of this was just preparation for the amazing show that Joe Arlott, the big-hitting Number 3 put on. Even with Andrew Flintoff taking apart those around him, he held strong and was really striking the ball well, he got to his 50 but found that noone else could hit at the rate he could. Not long after and the score was 122-4 with 81 needed to win and Arlott swinging away.

It was a great moment when Joe premeditated Tendulkar and slog swept him away to the boundary for 6 runs and a century! In the end Surrey needed just 38 overs to chase down the target and Arlott finished on 123 runs off just 115 deliveries. Only 4 wickets had fallen and Flintoff had taken 3 of them. This great performance will surely boost Arlott's allready great average of 51.

Now let's go live to Sunil Gavaskar live for the presentation ceremony.

SG: Thank you. Welcome to the WCC Post Match Presentation Ceremony, before we start I would like to congratulate the Surrey Lions for winning the match by 6 wickets. Now I would like to invite the losing captain of Mumbai, Sachin Tendulkar to come up here.

ST: Hello Sunil.

SG: Hello Sachin, how did you feel you and the team performed?

ST: Well we didn't perform too well in the batting, we didn't score quickly enough and allthough most of us got starts, we were either out or simply not scoring. And then in the bowling, Freddy started well picking up 2 early on but Joe Arlott just kept smashing us and there was nothing we could do, we didn't really play well enough to win. But another week and another game so we won't let this affect us.

SG: Thank you Sachin. Now I would like to see the winning captain, Mohendra Shrinivas, please come up here.

MS:Hi Sunil, really happy to be here.

SG: Now you look really happy, before you start praising are there any negatives that have come from this match?

MS: Only really the lack of support for Joe in our chase, if he hadn't performed so well we would have been in trouble.

SG: And the positives?

MS: That innings by Joe, it was a masterclass in how to hit a ball and make an innings in a OD match, I hope all the kids in Surrey were watching. Also Tully's economical bowling and Lumet's bowling, what a 6th round draftee he was.

SG: What do you think about this new finance system?

MS: I'm personally not a great fan of it, I know our coach isn't either, some of the less intelligent staff at the club don't understand it. But we'll have to live with it. Or go on a mass strike. Only joking, Board!

Now it's time to announce the winner of the WCC Man of the Match award. He will win a magnum of champagne, Aus$ 10,000 and the Man of the Match trophy. He will also go into the Lions Award draw. Now let's hear it for... JOE ARLOTT!
Hi Joe, how do you feel on winning the Award?

JA: Well, Sunil, it's an honour to be picked for this Award. I felt in good form in the leadup to the match, and when I started playing I was just stroking the ball around naturally. When I got into the 80's i decided to start smashing it and it felt great to get that century. I hope there's many more from the Surrey Boys.

SG: Your WCC Man Of The Match: JOE ARLOTT!. Next week our featured match will be Lancashire vs Surrey live from Old Trafford in Four Day Division 1. Don't forget to tune in for the CW Bar Cup Preliminary Round on Wednesday, our match will be the Day-Night match Live from the Mellenium Stadium, Cardiff for Cardiff vs Bangkok. Until then Goodbye.

Western Australia a Farce

another pathetic batting effort by western australia have the team now looking at relegatoin from dvi 3. the bowlers did their job, and restricted the opposiotn to just 139, but that was to much for WA to chase

nsw v lancashire

In what was a much needed victory by the nsw blues itw as going to be a tough ask against last years division one winners lancashire. with nsw last week getting beat by other heavy weights south australia 2 losses in a row could have been season ending allready with such a hard comp.

nsw batted first on what looked a good wicket and really wanted to get of to a good start however english fell early for 12(16) and nsw early on where 1 - 22 then the partnership happened between nsw rookie k stoddard with 89(116) continuing on his form from the tonne last weekend and shetty 126* (134) really set up the nsw blues for a big total, stoddar went with teh score at 242 when veteran kallis clubbed a quick and impressive 37(34) to give nsw a nice total to defend of 2 - 286 of there 50 overs.

nsw hoping to defend that total got of to a flyer with lancashire realling ay 5 - 77 thanks some quality bowling by q moore with 5 - 29 of 9 and sharif chipping in wth 3 wickets although a little expensive, q moore very happy with his form after last year in the one ay game was told he may only be an fc bowler, working very hard he hopes to change that around. english also chipped in with one wicket, lancashire never really got going after the poor start and r sarwan tried to give them something with a nice 67(78) then the next highest was 39(30) from qambrani.

all in all a good solid peformance by nsw which puts a nice start to their campagn for another close one day comp in division one.

Warwickshire have beaten South Australia by 15 runs in a match dominated by two diabolical batting collapses. Rigby took 5/21 to bring in the man of the match award.

Warwickshire recovered from shaky start to 2/88. Howarth and Dowla set up a fantastic platform. Things were about to turn bad though. From 2/88, 4/133 was reached, before the unthinkable took place as the final 6 wickets were lost for 8 runs. Warwickshire were all out for 141. Alexby and Bandara took 3 wickets each. The Warwickshire fans were somewhat angry, many opting to head home early.

South Australia were reduced to 2/12 early on with Dravid and Allen both back in the hut. A well played 42 from van Jaarseveld saw South Australia reach 122/5, victory a mere 20 runs away. With 5 wickets and some 20 overs left to reach the target the game seemed safe. However, Rigby took the last wickets as the visitors crashed to to 126 all out losing their final 5 wickets for 4 runs.

Warwickshire are happy to take the points, but will be hoping the batting can get it's act together for the final round

Apparently the effort of Worcestershire was not even good enough to warrant a mention of the team's name. But I can say that I'm happy with how we're going- round 1 we showed our batting strength, this round the bowlers did the job.

Colts Batsmen save the day

Colts Batsmen have come through after a slightly lacklustre performance. Auckland made a solid 8/270 in their Innings, dominated by a 104 from O Oneil batting at number 5. Edwards was the pick of the Colts bowlers in his 2nd game for the Colts, taking 3/55. Troughton gave solid support taking 2/45.

The Colts reply came in good time, Darden was out early but Butt (57 from 62), MOTM Andrews (124* from 111) and Madanagopal (67 from 70) kept up a good pace as Colts Cruised to victory in the 44th over.

Province Prove Unstoppable on the Road

With just one more week left of their overseas run, Province look set to complete a perfect record after a strong display in their OD match against Northern Districts. Both teams in seasons gone past have been described as amongst the poorest OD outfits in the competition, so the tension was noticeable out in the middle.

Northern Districts won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a highway. To make matters worse for the South Africans Nick Khan picked up a minor injury in the first over, putting the opening bowler out for the rest of the match. Nick Kumble however was able to shine as he kept things tight from one end not letting ND's batting get on top. Jimmy Schofield bought himself on and had an immediate impact as he dismissed Graeme Smith, and put a halt to ND's steady advance. Sangakarra then joined Holland but once again Schofield was able to ruin the partnership just as the game looked like getting away from the visitors. A middle order collapse then followed as ND lost 4-24 with all the bowlers chipping in. With the game now in Province's favour Herath joined Barney Hussain and the two set about delighting the home crowd. With Hussain's brutal blows and Herath's clever shot making, everything the Province bowlers could throw at their opponents came back twice as hard. The pair added 133 before the 50th over and gave ND a healthy score of 256, but would it be enough on this pitch?

With Llewellyn back in the pavillion first ball to a corker of a Khan delivery, things looked grim for the visitors. Birch and Drumbill then looked shakey as the home side quickly gained the ascendency. When Drumbill got caught behind for just 22, ND knew they were in control and the home fans began to get vocal. Birch however was beginning to look settled and Anderson joined him at the crease determined to fight hard to keep WP winning streak going. However a dubious decision from Alim-Dah gave the home team control again just as Province began to fight at 3-120. However captain Jimmy Schofield made his intentions clear from ball one as the first ball he faced rocketed over mid off for four runs. Schofield was at his brutal best as he and Birch were able to smash the Province side through the 30-40 over period at just over 7 an over making the target get closer and closer. The pair were able to cruise to victory with just over 4 overs to spare, with man of the match Birch compiling a health 109 not out, and skipper Schofield 82 not out.

The win leaves Province with a perfect record after three games this season. Slats4ever is brimming with confidence about his sides performances and expects more winning results.

Slats4ever: "A game we were expected to win, and we did it fairly comfortably in the end. Chasing 257 on this pitch was always gettable and it was just good to see the boys take advantage of a good pitch and really cash in. This win sends a clear message to all of our OD opponents and that is to take us seriously this season. The side has tremendous batting depth, and good bowling class. The way the bowlers were able to come together and cover for Khan who got injured, was a tribute to the work they've been putting in".

Travelling to Manuka Oval is never an easy task, and that was backed up this weekend when the Comets destroyed Free State in what could be described as an intimidating team effort.

Batting 1st on a wicket that didnt look to have many deamons, Free State made hard work of it. Ramage bowled as good as he has ever conceding only 7 runs from his 6 over opening spell.
However despite the lack of runs, Free State managed to avoid the loss of wickets with the openers starting to find some touch..

That was until McPhee was brought into the attack, he quickly removed both openers and when Tweedie turned his batting form into bowling form Free State had gone from 0/47 to 4/55 within minutes..
McPhee was replaced after a 7 over 1st spell and Platt was introduced and with almost immediate effect, removing key man Hussey for 3...
Javed fought hard but wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end and when Javed fell 3 short of a half century, Free State Innings was as good as over...
Free State eventually All Out for a modest 151 in 45 overs..
For the home side, Tweedie and McPhee both took 3 wickets with Laker, Silva, Platt and Dawn all picking up 1. Ramage the unlucky one finishing with 0/7 from 6 overs...

In reply ACT lost Agnew for 12 as he still tries to come to grips with the rigours of professional cricket.. A steadying partnership from Dawn and Tweedie however all but put the game beyond doubt as they took the score along to 106 before Tweedie fell for a well made 41...
Tremlett got his 2nd a few overs later when he had platt caught for 8, but other then a major collapse ACT had this game in the bag. Dawn and Ponting finished it off with Dawn remaining 66 not out and Ponting 18 not out..
ACT passing the vistors score in only the 35th over... The win maintains the Comets winning start to the season..

So close but so far…

A roller-coaster match at Canterbury between Kent and Karnataka finished with Kent on the losing side. Kent were given the first opportunity on the Canterbury but struggled to get the run rate up in the early overs as a result of some accurate bowling from Karnataka spearhead Ali, when finished with five maidens in his 10 over spell taking 1 for 31. Kent openers Stratton and Hemp withstood the early pressure from Ali to compile a 50 run partnership. Kent looked to up the run rate but was pegged back by wickets from Wadekar. A 61 partnership from French and Khan gave a Kent good bases to attack to Karnataka in the final 40 overs 7 wickets in hand. Some big hitting in the final over by Kent captain Muzumbar, 31 (24) gave Kent a respectable total of 224.

Karnataka came out in their innings looking like they had a to catch the early fight home to India. After the early loss of Horwarth to a run out Kale and Borde took to the Kent quicks, seeing them in a comfortable position of 1/76 about 10 overs. After Kale and Borde got dismissed Karnataka lost regular to see then in trouble at 7 for 198. Karnataka lower order should composure to take them over the line with 12 overs to spare.

Looking back at the match Kent lost the game in the first 10 to 15 overs in both innings. The slow run rate at the start Kent innings left them 20 to 30 runs short of the score they required on this Canterbury pitch. Then Karnataka top order put the boys from India when in control at 1/76 and allowed them to continually attack the Kent bowlers through out their innings.

The areas where Kent probably lost the match was their batsmen inability to turn starts into big scores and the bowlers not bowling a tight enough line. In saying that when Kent had Karnataka at 7 for 198 you would have backed them to finish them off and get the points for Kent. After two rounds now Kent see themselves in last place, but there is a belief around Canterbury that they wont be there too long.
