Try to make a case where Maugh had a real advantage. Not just for the sake of it.

Maugh batted with the likes of Taylor, Slater, Saugh, Martyn, Ponting and later with Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Saugh, Gilchrist.

It was not like Indian batting was really superior to this Aus lineup.
I wasn't trying to say Laxman had an advantage but how important he was to the Indian lineup.

Laxman's my favourite Non-Australian player ever, just loved watching him.
Throughly enjoyed watching his performances in Australia (particularly in Sydney), didn't matter that it was against us at all.
Miles ahead of Waugh IMO, although Waugh gets the nod on fielding between the two.
I feel similar about Damien Martyn

Scored 90 odd in 03 WC final
Scored 100 at Eden gardens in TVS cup final 6 months later
Batted like a God in IND and SL in 04 and Aus won both the test series
Again Batted beautifully in 06 Champions Trophy in IND.

For a West Australian guy brought up at Perth , he was probably the best Australian
player of spin bowling .

Laxman had his share of unique impact innings, but I think Waugh overtakes him on this score. Australia never lost when he scored a century. And the context of his innings shows why he was so valued. Delivered under pressure.

138 against England in 91 - Saved Australia when they were in a hole in the first innings
139 against WI in 91 - Clutch knock that helped Australia to win a tough away test
112 against WI in 92 - Again helped to save Australia after a 1st innings collapse
113 against SA in 93 - Battling knock to ensure a draw
137 against England in 93 - Bailed them out at 80/4 to set a matchwinning score
126 against WI in 95 - Crucial partnership with Waugh that decided the series
116 against SA in 97 - ATG knock to chase against a strong SA attack
115 against SA in 98 - Helped to save the test and win the series for Australia
153 against India in 98 - Very important knock to get Australia level with India's high score
117 against Pakistan in 98 - Helped to ensure a draw and win the series
119 against WI in 2000 - Took them from a spot of bother to a matchwinning score
Also performed beautifully, like a top quality German car, on a tour of Sri Lanka.

I'd say Lehmann with Martyn a close second

I'll get them to teach you how to judge cricketers if you like. Lehmann **** the bed the minute anyone bowled >135 to him. He was an incredibly mediocre test player. The idea he was better than Mark Waugh is completely lolworthy.

Just the silly recency bias on CW to prefer ordinary 2000s bullies for 90s quality players. As seen with Steve Waugh, Kirsten and Saeed Anwar.

I was going to mention this. He couldn't handle genuine pace therefore to average as high as he did he must have had an excellent handle on spin

And just looking at his stats, other than obviously 04 SL series where he tamed Murali he got a 98 in.. '98 against Saqlain and Mustaq Ahmed together

Triple posting but just chiming into say this is so on the money

His SCG ton in '99 was also very important as we were up 2-1 but England had momentum after their surprise victory in the 4th test

For some reason all of Mark Waugh's tons were so timely and memorable. And he hardly ever got 2 in a series, but he also barely ever went 2 series without one

Yeah. Waugh's value to the side is beyond just what his record reflects.

The way he gets hyped, Maugh must be the greatest ever test batsman in the 41 and below average bracket.
