you've got to remember though i approach this from thinking most knocks in australia since twenty fourteen or so have been mickey mouse knocks that aren't worthy of much mention (though for an away batsman to do what pant did is far more impressive than when oz bats rack up said scores).

unironically like the best innings played in australia since 2014 was smith in hobart first innings when the saffers toured.
Rahane's knock in MCG was also very good considering what happened in previous test and that pitch was not easy to bat.

I can understand what you're saying in the 2014-2016 period when Cummins/Haze wasn't formed and there were a ton of flat tracks. The last BG series had both of them taking plenty of wickets in the early 20s in some very good bowling conditions over the series including the 36 AO. It's important to note that Pant's runs have come exclusively against attacks including Cummins.

Noted Fab 4 member Virat Kohli's average in Australia drops from 54 to 40 in games involving Cummins. Williamson's average in Australia drops from 43 to 14 in games involving Cummins. Pant has 600+ runs @ 62 in 7 tests against Cummins which is miles ahead of anyone else. He was also absurdly consistent over those tests.

While de Kock and Pant discussions are worthy of a legitimate debate, Conway being mentioned in this list is 'lol' worthy.

It really does not...

It also amuses me that Pant is spoken about like a second coming but people forget about QDK.
not really, QdK has fallen away a fair bit after a meteoric start. I do expect the same to happen to Pant

Which says more about people not watching cricket outside their sphere, when QDK has just put together his most impressive batting performance against a good WI attack against a moving Duke ball... but it is not against the big 3.

Flem is a troll but the **** and the pants are nowhere near this debate either. And nor should they be really, given they're glovemen and that presents a whole new challenge

but i do think, ok fair while i may have been a bit quick to fire by saying hes better than root and (especially) marn00s, i would say that root's definitely in the same tier of bats as pant and that's a tier below your smiths and your kohlis
especially marnus? labuschagne hasn't done **** to be better than root. like sure he had a solid england tour and dominated at home but serious samplesizelol here.

exactly. QDK clearly better than Pant at this stage.
What does amuse me is that somehow Pant has become part of the fab discussion, and shows how much runs by and against the big 3 is more important in rating players than just about any other metric.
nail. head.

take a rest son. that's the WTC final highest innings scorer you're trash talking.

i wanted this thread for the title and the speculation. apart from that you are correct.

You can pick both for the moment tbf. If/When De Kock starts to rise, you can drop Pant
But today I learned that the Saffers have already dropped Pant and just walk around waving De Kock around, shoving it in everyone's faces.

Whatever it takes!!!
Given I have two young kids, I put him nowhere. And I certainly don't introduce him to the attack with Pat Cummins.
Cummins into the attack early can spell trouble for De Kock and Pant, but you solve all these problems if you ensure Hardik is in there before all this.

Or, if I am opting to introduce Hardik and Cummins to the crease in partnership,I make sure Jimmy is also part of the attack.

This needs its own thread

Anyways Pant will definitely struggle when there’s movement from what we’ve seen so far. Pace, bounce, dry, slow, turning wickets etc he seems to be able to deal with pretty well.
Does any batsman not struggle with movement? It's such a weird qualifier.

Flem automatically seems to put an asterix over any batsman who plays his shots. But do we see Pujara scoring any better in England/NZ than Pant? It is a bizarre qualifier based on no evidence.

Pant's ability to score runs is the crucial factor here.

The jury is out on what his career will look like but it's so weird to put the "doesn't do well against the moving ball" qualifier when it's something that affects every batsman and in and in any case his role in the team has never and will never require him to be Rahul Dravid.
