Verlander/Fister/Scherzer/Porcello/Turner isn't the worst of rotations.

They needed an impact bat after VMart went down. Getting Fielder makes a lot of sense, paying out the nose on a 9yr contract does not.

That's assuming Fister is actually as good as his half a season in Detroit suggests. I wouldn't bet on it.
He was great all of last year, he just got more run support in Detroit. And he was pretty decent in 2010 too, always had great command but learnt to strike batters out.

He is due for a bit of regression, but he is still a more than capable number 2. Hardly walks a batter, and gets a lot of ground balls. He isn't pitching in Safeco any more, but Comerica is still pretty pitcher friendly, iirc.

Indeed. It's good for the short term, they have like a 3 year window where Cabrera, Verlander, and Fielder will all be at their peaks, but after that.....

They have 3 DH's hooked up to rather large contracts. 2013-2014 they will have close to $60m tied up on 3 players with only one position between them.

They've basically gone to Vegas and put all the savings on black.
so where is cabrera going to play now i dont think he would want to dh anytime soon

also i think they will have a longer window than 3 yrs all three are only in their late 20s

Game 162

A great piece by Tampa Bay’s Sam Fuld on the last game of the season. It was such a riveting night watching the Red Sox collapse and the Rays make that epic comeback. I don’t think I’ve ever been as entertained by a regular season day in baseball as I was that day.

New post season structure, is a go for this season.

Going to be a mess this year since they didn't change the schedule, but I think it is a good move. Winning the division is now rewarded, and the WC teams have some kind of penalty. The only problem for this year is the 2-3 format for the lds series. Hopefully this gets sorted out for next year.

Darvish will be making his debut against my M's.

Hopefully that game will be free on MLB.tv. Even better if it's Darvish vs Noesi.

Its only for this year since they wanted to eliminate the travel day

MLB showed a few innings of Darvish's spring training starts. I hope they do have this game on for free. I'm so excited for the season! I have managed to put away the heartbreak of Game 6 in a deep and inaccessible corner of my heart (don't think I'll ever be able to forget it though). As they say, third time's the charm. :)

Also, my head is still spinning from the deals that were handed out to Votto and Matt Cain. I guess baseball owners are not hurting for money these days!

Those were dumb deals.....Votto is not worth that much let alone 12 yrs.....Cain is a very good pitcher but how do you bring back Lincecum now??? Sabean has always been an idiot

Nah, Votto's a stud.

They are obviously expecting a bit of inflation. Paying a premium for locking him up for his prime years. 12 years is pretty long, but the Annual Average Value is pretty cheap for a player of his calibre. If he can continue producing at 6-7 WAR for the next 5yrs, and then doesn't go into too much decline, I think it's a good deal.

It's a risk, but a calculated one.
