Lowlights of the Games

Herb Elliott was never banned from a World Cup ffs
As a complete aside, I drove past the track in Oxford last week (something I'll probably be doing a fair bit of over the next 3 years) where Bannister broke the 4 minute mile. It's now 70 years since then and of course Elliott soon took it to completely different levels. But at some point I intend to park up and have a walk around it, there's just something special about sporting venues where a magical event happened.

Good to see Elliott is still alive too.

I think I read that Herb’s winning time in Rome would have won the 1500 in Barcelona. Crazy runner. By all accounts a real gentleman too.

Breaking will surely not be seen again.
A damn shame how one rotten apple can spoil the bunch.

It's intrinsically no worse, and potentially more athletically oriented than many artistically judged events like rhythmic gymnastics, or ice dancing or whatever.

Discovery + and Eurosport have the main rights to the tv coverage. BBC were only allowed the minimum of coverage

I don’t think the Olympics are on the so called Crown Jewels events that most be solely the free to air channels after the last government reviewed the list

Michael Johnson really made the Atlanta Olympics memorable for me. Barcelona was pretty good too, who can forget that picturesque diving setting.

London tops the list for me though. I live there and locals generally thought it probably end up being a huge dud, but it exceeded everyone's expectations by a lot. Appreciate it even more now after Paris and them disappointing in certain areas.

I think all the hate and vitriol directed at Ray Gun after her performance are a lowlight of these games as well. Especially the personal abuse accusations of corruption. Australians just can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that they suck at something.

The hate’s coming from everywhere else, I think many Australians find it hilarious

I think many found the entire concept of breaking in the Olympics hilarious to begin with, so nobody here really cares. (perhaps some in the actual breaking community?)

Seen a few American accounts on social media claiming the breaking competition is cultural appropriation and disrespectful to hip-hop culture but hey-ho.

Yep, I don't think anyone took it seriously, and Raygun typified all of that and a whole lot more.

And when it comes to being a ridiculous competitor, I'm surprised GB didn't get more **** for entering a bloke in the skateboarding who could've been the father (grandfather in some cases) of his fellow boarders.
