I have to disagree with you there Darren. Recent studies have shown that garden gnomes, although widely associated with Botswana, and indeed the whole Botswanan economy, garden gnomes are in fact one of the poorest exports to come out of that country. As this graph clearly shows, the sale of Botswanan-manufactured garden gnomes, including the ever popular ones with the fishing rods, has decreased at an alarming rate in recent years.
A recent study shows that other garden ornaments made in Botswana, such as novelty door mats, are becoming more and more essential to the struggling nation's economy. Beautiful, hand made door mats, such as these
have taken off in recent years. In fact, the sale of such products has grown at an almost exponential rate as this graph bears out.
So, in conclusion, it would appear that while garden gnomes are globally associated with and indeed credited to Botswana, they are in fact not as pivotal as one would initially think.
