Actually reckon KP is a lot smarter than he looks and might have pulled a swifty on everyone.

Pretty clear he wanted a rest for 8 pretty meaningless ODI's, so he's retired, gone on holidays in SA, come back fresh for the series against his homeland knowing he'll be under intense scrutiny for that period. He'll be in much better shape for the huge mental load he'll have than had he played the nothing ODI's.

From there, he comes out of retirement for the T20 WC which he wanted to play in, plus he may very well now have lost his ODI spot which you'd imagine might not keep him up at night.

He's probably finished one step ahead of where everyone predicted and might end up getting his way after all.

An almost throwaway remark about KP from the ever sage Vic Marks in today's Observer caught my eye:

You know this how? do think the likes of Morris and Flower would bow to his terms.

It appears to me contrary to what a few journos have said at the time, is that he wanted to miss the WI series and the ECB was unwilling to give him what he wanted and the talks broke down. Since then it appears that KP and Morris have come together and talked it through and reach some common ground, which is what a lot of people where saying in the first place should have happened.

The papers this morning say that KP's 'people' have made the offer to the ECB that if KP can miss the May tests to play IPL then he will play all three forms the rest of the time.

Little of the latter, a lot of the former, one suspects.

Missing tests to play IPL doesn't in any way make KP look like a Saffer carpet bagger.

He wants his cake and to eat it, can't blame him for that but it makes you wonder why he and the selectors couldn't have sat down and thrashed it out over a proper rest regime instead of both having hissy fits and a stand off.

Said that all along, both seem as bad as each other and like you say can't see this ending in a satisfactory way.

I wonder how this information has become public, is it the ECB or KP's representatives doing, I suspect the former.

To answer my own question definitely the former, in an article about this it said
