Kane Williamson not in league of other elite test batters

I reckon batting away from home is harder in this era. Only smith from this era averages 50+ away and Kohli and Root will probably will end with away averages in the low 40s. (Or maybe batsmen are just much worse today? Idk)
Yeah batting away seems harder, specifically due to even weaker sides like Bangladesh and Windies having potent attacks in their home conditions, and teams like India and England having far more dominant attacks at home than away it seems.

In fact the second highest averaging batsman away who debuted after the 00’s is actually Darren Bravo.

In more bowler-friendly eras, batting away is harder because teams have prepared their tracks to suit their bowlers.

@Majestic Chris Gayle vs Kane Williamson, whose the better batsmen?

Chris Gayle in Eng/Aus/SA/Sl/Ind

Matches – 32
Innings – 60
Runs – 2392
Highest – 333
Average – 41.24
Half Centuries – 9
Centuries – 6

Kane Williamson in Eng/Aus/SA/SL/Ind

Matches – 33
Innings – 63
Runs – 1970
Highest – 166
Average – 32.83
Half Centuries – 8
Centuries – 5

Gayle solos no?
Gayle is underrated as a test batsman. Openers usually have lower averages compared to middle order batsman because they have to face the new ball which swings more. However, Gayle was lucky to get a lot of flat pitches and he did well there. He has good record in Australia and South Africa and that can't be discounted. However, his home record was also poor vs major test nations. There were several test openers during his era who averages much higher than him.

Williamson has great record at home and in Pakistan/UAE but he has been poor away in India, England, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

All factors combined, Williamson is ahead because of you look at his overall record vs top 8 nations, it is much higher than Gayle. If Williamson fails in India again, his stature should take a massive hit while if he performs, he will join the league of elite players. There are lot of players that have come, played 2 test series and performed and gone, there is no reason for him to not do it anymore.

actually yeah, I was looking into the home bowling stats of all the sides and without minnow bashing it's kind of absurd how much of a gap there is between the home performances of the bowling attacks of 2000s and of the fab 4 era

Perhaps Williamson should demote himself in the batting position as he has given enough evidence that he is not elite test batter away from home via his awful away stats where he has placed himself well below many names even if we do a filter from 01 Jan 2010 onwards. Do make sure you go through this link well otherwise you may have tough time searching for Williamson.

Note - Here I included neutral venues so that Kane's performance vs India in WTC Final gets included as he doesn't have many good performance away from home vs top teams anyways.

rip Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Bowling’s gone to ****. (tbf SL’s isn’t that bad Murali was just such a freak) Though curious how things would change with UAE included

tbf Sri Lanka is better than Eng/Ind/NZ, supports your point about the strength of Home team attacks. now onto Pakistan, Pakistan in UAE seems a pretty capable attack, it's mostly the wickets but still. during the Fab 4 era:
