Much lower, he played in a team that has openers struggling to average 30+ except ofcourse Cook.
Ponting is better and Root would need a very strong finish to change that. But Root has never at any point had a half decent top 3 ahead of him, and has played in a tougher era in a more bowler-friendly country. He has innumerable hundreds after being brought to the crease very early. Ponting had a machine-like opening partnership ahead of him in his prime; batting a position higher has little value in this comparison imo.

Ponting>Sangakkara is a stance I'm 10000000% sure I have but I don't think I would be able to make an argument to statistically justify it, at all.

Ponting was a better player of pace bowling and he averaged 48 in Sri Lanka and scored alot in the UAE and Pakistan, so its not like he was that bad player of spin.

But if Root has a good ashes down under, then he is the obvious choice. Australian pitches in the 2000s were flat.
Ever since 2018, it has been more difficult for batsmen in tests.

And Root has carried England countless number of times.

Not yet, but I think Root is going to be one of those players that get better and better. He's probably going to do an Anderson.

Batting isn't as draining as bowling and yes England do play more Tests than other countries, but it would take a hell of a lot of desire and obsessiveness to go past Tendulkar's 15,921.

The thing is if he carries on like he is at present he will be in 2nd place on the list by the end of the Ashes down under and may only be 2 home summers of good output away from catching Tendulkar. He will probably have a dip in form at some point so would take longer but it is feasible he will do it given how many matches we play.

It's a valid point considering Ponting was worse in India (albeit less opportunities). He had a couple of decent series elsewhere in Asia but Root has done fairly well in SA which balances that out. Lacking a ton in Australia is a big blot though. Next year's ashes is massive.

Oh yeah he will easily be 2nd barring a bad injury.

Ponting still for me. Root has the respect of other sides but I doubt he fills you with fear like Ponting did me. Only Viv and Ponting gave me that feeling and obviously Lara and Tendulkar once they got in but Pontings wicket was probably the one I wanted us to get most in his career given the magnitude of the matches and how he destroyed us so often.

I think it stands out for Root specifically because it's like, the literal only blot in his record, everything else might as well be picture perfect.
