Is this a piss taking thread or what? Also, if we are talking in terms of ODI batting then why did you include Test, First Class, List A and Twenty20 statistics in the opening post?

Sanath Jayasuriya, by a fair margin.

Edit/ Oh Yer, and Gilchrist >>> Knight. Cant believe we are even having this thread. Like the Gilly v Knight thread, its sheer lunacy.

My answer is the same as the previous poll. Knight>Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya is a very good player who is far less one dimensional than Gilchrist is, and has offered a lot more to the game than Gilchrist ever did, but the basic fact is that Jayasuriya has always been a flat track bully. Even in his heyday he couldnt score a run against Australia, SA(Donald, Pollock, Devilliers) and WI in the Walsh/Ambrose era, and his record against all of these sides is dismal beyond belief.

And what is even more ludicrous are those who claim that Knight, who went to the respective countries and scored prolifically against all 3 of those attacks in their own backyards, isnt even worthy of a comparison with Jayasuriya

Considering we're talking about a player who changed the way the game was played...I'm going to have to go with Alfred.

Why would it be a piss take?????

I included them because i couldn't be arsed taking them out of the cricinfo stats bit.

Poor form regarding the statistics part IMO. Well I thought it might be a bit of a piss take because we just had a Nick Knight vs Adam Gilchrist thread, I didn't really see the need for the same principles to be applied to another player.

Knight is technically the better batsman, but 12000+ ODI runs is nothing to scoff at, really. And I know which one I'd prefer watching when on song. Probably have Sanath in my team if I was picking before Knight, too. Chance of him going beserk is too tempting to turn down, even if Knight would be more guaranteed runs.

It'd depend, very much, for me. I think tec hit the nail on the head earlier. Jayasuriya is brilliant - absolutely brilliant - at murdering rubbish bowling. I've seen a few utterly inept displays of bowling in my time, every bit as bad as England-vs-SL at Headingley in 2006. But never before then have I seen such a display completely destroyed the way he (and Tharanga, but Tharanga was obviously inferior at it) did that day. If I knew the attack I was up against was something poor like that, I'd want Jayasuriya before I'd want most other batsmen - including both Ganguly and Anwar.

However, if I was facing McGrath, Pollock and Ambrose (and, let's face it, I'd much prefer see that attack than Harmison, Kabir Ali and Plunkett) - give me Knight anyday.

Is it really that difficult to modify a bit of text to delete something that's utterly irrelevant to what you're talking about?
