Exactly!

West Indies weren't just trying to get you out. They wanted to finish you off. And the crowd would come to see that baying for your blood.
Lillee and Thompson were doing this way before we were.

Before then it was Lindwall and Miller.

Before then Martindale and Constantine

Before then Body line.

Sure was someone before them.

If you teach a kid Cricket, he'd figure out bowling fast and hitting your opponent with a fast bowl is a tactic he'd figure out in five days. Speed wise, I do thinks 70s-80s guys were faster (Thommo, Lillee) but probably not my much, 2-2.5mph over guys like Hall/Miller/Larwood/Tyson at most

I don't think Lillee was faster than Tyson or Larwood

Fastest recorded speed of Lillee in the 1979 study was 154.8 kmph. In the book "The Fast Men" Larwood speed was somehow recorded as 154.5 kmph.

So, sadly, we have as much evidence to suggest that Larwood bowled faster than Lillee as Zidane's hair.

Bumrah has troubled Root most of the time, so it's safe to assume that he wouldn't have fared too bad against more patient run accumulators from the 90s.

The only batsman who handled him the best is probably Dean Elgar till now.

Could you provide with the individual stat of Bumrah against Elgar? That'd be cool.

Nothing to do with stats, purely my observation through watching the game.

No batter looked as gritty as him against Bumrah who made the ball deviate like crazy off the pitch.

Tbf Root has struggled against most great fast bowlers of his era (Bumrah, Cummins, Hazlewood). Great player of spin though.

Quality of test batting around the world is very low atm but I think Bumrah would still be an ATG in any era

Your observation was right.
Here's the stats of Elgar vs Bumrah:-

Averaging 35.8 against a bowler averaging 19.5 is great.

This kinds of stats don't really convince me of anything. An out not given, a no of drop catches, a out given poorly, playing him good and getting out trying to score fast; and most importantly, everything with the rest of the lineup. Just too many wild variables at play.

Root vs Bumrah has been a pretty even battle, Root struggled greatly in the series earlier this year (though, bowling was clearly ****ing with his batting) but he also has 6 hundreds against Bumrah and averages 60 in the games where Bumrah has played. Usually, Bumrah has the upper hand in India and Root in England.

Cummins does get him though, it's pretty terrible with Cummins

Agreed, Bumrah has got Root 9 times as well. Maybe by the next UK tour he will reach the same figures as Anderson vs Tendulkar.

Bumrah has been great against Root this year. Maybe he can continue that in the next year?
