My friend, just to set the record straight on Hobbs.

I concede that based on record and achievements he is right up there in contention with Sachin for no.2 of all time.

However, I think lacking a qualitative component of directly viewing him play, it is difficult to make a complete assessment of Hobbs and hence I feel Sachin is more fitting as the no.2 in light of modern era scrutiny. But I don't think even with a negative in direct viewing would I have his dropoff any lower than absolute batting top tier.

Hobbs is no.3 on my list and in my ATG XI.

Let's bury the hatchet on this one.

It’s not just that we can’t see Hobbs play, it’s that cricket is a much broader more diverse game in Sachin’s time. A game that essentially excluded people of colour and only had two real teams has to be downgraded.

don't really get the point of all this tbh, I can also say Cricket of modern times excluded things like matted wickets and wet wickets, and thus should be downgraded. That is essentially the same thing.

assuming the Diversity is Cricket related btw, don't think other discussions are appropriate for this forum.

Sobers, Tendulkar, Viv , Hobbs (and now, Smith) are the strongest contenders for the best after Bradman spot. Not much between them overall, some very strong arguments for each.
