This post should be stickied at the top of any thread pertaining to JA......dead set the best and most accurate appraisal of Jimmy I've seen.

Including the last sentence which I think most if not all Eng fans here on CW would agree with.
Yeah I used to be one of those who would try to diminish Anderson myself.

But upon reflection, think about how important was the win in Ashes 2010, England's only victory in Australia in the past 30 odd years.

Think about how important was the win in India 2012, England's only victory in India the past 30 odd years.

Think about this recent series victory in Pakistan on concrete pitches no England team in the past could win on.

Yet Anderson was indispensable in all of these victories. Most top tier ATGs would be happy to have those sort of milestones.

If he can notch up those on his belt, while being regularly worldclass at home, and still win you games in the subcontinent in marathon spells at age 40, who gives a crap what his detractors think?

He's the classic English seam and swing bowler and is obviously not suited to conditions Down Under using the useless kookaburra ball that offers bowlers **** all.
Anderson hasn't been horrible in Australia if you ask me. He was awesome in 2010, and respectable though not penetrative in the last two Ashes while being hammered in 2013/14.

Whatever it takes!!!
I said it long back. To me, he is a great bowler, not quite an ATG but his longevity and important spells in big wins OS continues to sway him that much closer to the ATG level in my book.

It doesn't have to be binary, horrible or ATG. He's being held up against an impossible standard by people expecting him to match the ATGs which makes it look like people are calling him bad. He's incredible and doing what he is at his age especially, and for as long as he has, is incredible. He doesn't have to be as good as Marshall or McGrath to be special

I agree. He is a great. To me he ends up in the top 25 pacers of all time. The only thing I wanted to push back against is this idea he is condition-dependent which is just not true.

Are you implying these places are easy to bowl in for pacers?
No… I was simply reading the stats in the other places to bowl…. No need to take every post as an offence.

Well its the small but vocal minority calling him an ATG and comparing him to top pacers of all time which is why he’s overrated. Without checking his stats much I’d probably rate him similarly to Kumble vs other spinners. Quality lengthy careers, but not quite up there.

This seems to me to be the point all these imbeciles throwing his away averages around are missing. Anybody that watched those 2 series couldn't come to any other conclusion that he was immense and a major contributor to the huge series wins.

Yet guess what....from memory his average for both series was around 30.

So the point is you can be fkn awesome in conditions that aren't ideal for you and still return that sort of average. When you combine that that with a ~22 ave for a decade all up, 675 test poles, still doing the business at 40 after a 20 year career.....you've realy got a very very special bowler worthy of respect.

Anyone that seeks to dismiss and not acknowledge that is, as my mate GIMH so eloquently put it......just being a belligerent dickhead.

I think Kumble was slightly quicker through the air but Anderson gets more turn
