Burgey makes some darn good points tbh

I didn't realise his average was that bad in all those countries

The clincher will be what his average in the countries has been in, say, just the last decade
From Jan 1 2012
Aus 32.69
NZ 31.66
SA 30.00
Ind 29.33

Averages between 18 and 21 in Eng, Pak, SL, UAE and Windies. Shocker.

Overall in that time

Home: 62 matches, 265 wickets @ 21.78
Away: 52 matches, 170 wickets @ 26.62

Anderson’s peak started around 2014. His record looks really good since then. If he continues for one more year, that’ll make it a decade of averaging 21.FFE6E1A4-44C1-4FFA-AC1A-789598B92484.jpeg

Every time my opinion changes on Jimmy something like this comes along to really hammer home that he's still a fair way back from the ATGs

Sri Lanka definitely is. That's one place the ball swings heaps. Southee and Boult average 15.5 and 18 respectively over there, which added together is about the same as Jimmy's 33.27.
The UAE was completely dead for pacers, yet Anderson produced one of the best series performances I have seen in 2015 on such pitches when even Steyn was mostly neutralised. Look at the Pindi test that Anderson just produced a matchwinning performance in, absolutely nothing in the wicket.

Calling Anderson 'Clouderson' is really one of the most silliest things I have seen. The only place he truly underperformed in has been SA. In Australia, his type of swing bowling was never going to be that successful in the mid-2010s.

If you look at it from a wider lens, Anderson's contribution to England cricket has been immense. Since he took over as the main pacer, he has kept England fairly strong at home for over a decade. He has had starring roles in series victories in SA, Australia, India, Pakistan and SL.

He may not be a top tier ATG overall but many great accomplishments.

The only thing to nitpick here is the low number of wickets away from home. Excellent average but not quite top tier strike bowler in some conditions. Otherwise, that's close to as good as it gets.

Will say one thing though, the recent uptick in very bowler friendly surfaces since 2017-18 has helped his longevity a bit. Especially in the ashes in Australia which had the spiciest decks I've seen there in ages. England manage his workload well so couple that with mostly friendly decks, and he doesn't quite have to bowl backbreaking spells on flat decks that often. The few occasions where he's had to bowl on roads, he's been awesome.

This post should be stickied at the top of any thread pertaining to JA......dead set the best and most accurate appraisal of Jimmy I've seen.

Including the last sentence which I think most if not all Eng fans here on CW would agree with.

Yeah, he’s been more of a Pollock type bowler rather than a Donald/Steyn type bowler.

Top post mate.

Anderson is a really top bowler and has been for a long time.

He's the classic English seam and swing bowler and is obviously not suited to conditions Down Under using the useless kookaburra ball that offers bowlers **** all.

There's more to a bowlers career than simple averages and Jimmy shows that. He's been a top performer for well over a decade. He's played 170 odd matches and will end up with 700 wkts - unheard of stats for a seamer. His longevity is unbelievable.

So to you Aussies who don't rate Jimmy, fair enough, but long after Jimmy's career has finished he'll be talked about and discussed in cricketing circles as an all time great bowler.

Fixed.

The Kookaburra isn't that bad. You hit seam, ball moves. It's not that ****ing difficult.
