ATG Prick and Test Cricketer. If he played for an average team, he'd have even better numbers.

I think Tamim was better but Bangladesh played so few tests during the time he was the best opener in the world, so he couldn't raise his profile.

I remember this. It was early on in his career around the time he was getting those 100's in England.

Would he get into Aus 2000-07 side ?
Him or Lee ?
Him or Lehmann as batsman?
Considering they often picked Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson the answer is yes.

Also Shakib or MacGill would be a good question. Another issue would be if Gilchrist wanted to bat 6 and Shakib at 7.

Finally, Shakib's "behaviour and willingness to win" would have endeared himself to the Aussie selectors.

Finger spin is next to useless in Australia. Watson was picked because he bowls seam up and Andrew Symonds often bowled seam up as well. Its also why Maxwell never got a proper go in the test side but Marsh and Green did/do.

He would have to make it either as a proper batsman over someone like Hussey or Martyn or as the front line spinner over Warne or McGill. Neither of those cases are likely

He'd have barely played Shield cricket in that era in Australia. Surplus to requirements. As Gob said, darting in finger spinners on unresponsive decks is as useless here as the rest of his hack game is everywhere apart from on his home decks, and he wouldn't have been in the top half dozen or so middle order batting options.
