Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

By your very own measure, Holding isn’t an ATG if we’re saying it’s a player that would be in serious contention for a second ATG XI
I disagree. I think Mikey is one of the top 3 quicks WI have produced and a very good candidate for consideration.

Don't just look at stats, although his are excellent. I can think of about 7/8 arguably better quicks. But he is right up there.
Marshall
Hadlee
McGrath
Steyn
Ambrose

Imran
Wasim
Donald
Garner
Lillee

Are better (and that’s without including anyone really old timey) - and then you start splitting hairs. He’s not in contention for a 2nd XI, ergo not an ATG by your very own measure.

Despite my strong convictions, let us sideline Holding for now and move on to Australians that are realistic candidates for ATG XI 1 or 2 selection.

Bradman
Warne
Lillee
McGrath
Miller
Gilchrist
Ponting
Smith

There will be others. I'm on the train so will post this before I lose signal. 2 are T1 locks: Bradman and Gilchrist.

I am suspending my personal pre cw/post cw conviction for the sake of conversation.

Alternative definition:

Batsman averaging over 50 with minimum 20 tests.
Bowlers averaging under 25 with the same caveat, or perhaps 100 wickets minimum. Some extra allowance wrt average for spinners as has always been the case.

This would expand the pool but I am content with my strictest definition. Off to work!

He is for sure

He is comfortably superior all round spinner compared to Jadeja. It's not Ashwin's fault that India management are bunch of idiots who keep him sit on the bench in SENA games

Averages worse than Jadeja in India, and he didn’t have the benefit of beating up on some really weak English etc sides of late at home.

For me an ATG means you are a viable candidate for selection into an alltime test XI - at least a 2nd XI. It is a very high bar. Many era greats, or country greats. A select few are true ATGs.

Ashwin is not an ATG. A country great - yes.
That is my criteria too.

No that is too broad
