The Wheel is Forever
Other English players were picked and both Swann and Anderson are better than all of them.
I think S.Africans were available for most of the playing period. Also he's a bit of an all-rounder.Yeah it looks a bit silly ignoring Swann after Botha was bought for that ridiculous figure and other English players were picked to fill vital spots.
Only reason I can think of is Botha has a bit of a T20 reputation but it's still silly. Other English players have been picked for important roles despite said availability issues. Stuart Broad especially.I think S.Africans were available for most of the playing period. Also he's a bit of an all-rounder.
I think the buying has been much better this year than the first year. There's evidently been much better research and reasoning behind the selections.
It depends on the needs of the individual team and what gaps they need to fill as well though. Punjab hadn't been able to retain any players so they had a few gaps to fill. Since Broad can bat as well, they saw him as a good pick.Only reason I can think of is Botha has a bit of a T20 reputation but it's still silly. Anderson though, not a big deal he didn't spark interest. There were better for IPL quick bowling options to splurge on.
Yeah I suppose the batting, fielding and availability bonus bits tipped the scales to fit RR's requirements. I don't get what the other teams were thinking fighting over him till they hit 900k while Swann was ignored though. I agree about the availability even though it seems he would miss a couple of games at the end, but when the article says on the one hand he's no mystery spinner and it is easy to hit a offie, they must be rating IPL better than international T20 because Swann has shown he has plenty of variation to bowl on any track and especially, considering how well he bowled in WI which will be similar conditions to India. They then go on to say about Botha, 'He is a fantastic offspinner, a superb fielder,' who went for $950,000 is bit of a contradiction. But anyway, one man who will be happy is Andy Flower, I think England benefited from not being involved in the IPL last year so from that viewpoint it's no bad thing.Nah!! They did not pick Swann because off it coinciding with county season, issues with availability and the end coinciding with the Srilanka series, plus a high base price.
They would have only picked him and taken a risk, if they felt he would be really great in T20's in India and have enough variations with off spinners going for big runs in IPL.
Of all the Australians signed so far, none of them won the Ashes. I know which camp I'd rather be in.So out of the 3 English players signed so far, 1's a Yarp, 1's Irish and the other one looks like a girl. Pretty sad state of affairs for them.
