Yeah it looks a bit silly ignoring Swann after Botha was bought for that ridiculous figure and other English players were picked to fill vital spots.

I think S.Africans were available for most of the playing period. Also he's a bit of an all-rounder.

I think the buying has been much better this year than the first year. There's evidently been much better research and reasoning behind the selections.

Only reason I can think of is Botha has a bit of a T20 reputation but it's still silly. Other English players have been picked for important roles despite said availability issues. Stuart Broad especially.

Anderson though, not a big deal he didn't spark interest. There were better for IPL quick bowling options to splurge on.

It depends on the needs of the individual team and what gaps they need to fill as well though. Punjab hadn't been able to retain any players so they had a few gaps to fill. Since Broad can bat as well, they saw him as a good pick.

Yeah I suppose the batting, fielding and availability bonus bits tipped the scales to fit RR's requirements. I don't get what the other teams were thinking fighting over him till they hit 900k while Swann was ignored though. Oh well.

Nah!! They did not pick Swann because off it coinciding with county season, issues with availability and the end coinciding with the Srilanka series, plus a high base price.

They would have only picked him and taken a risk, if they felt he would be really great in T20's in India and have enough variations with off spinners going for big runs in IPL.
I agree about the availability even though it seems he would miss a couple of games at the end, but when the article says on the one hand he's no mystery spinner and it is easy to hit a offie, they must be rating IPL better than international T20 because Swann has shown he has plenty of variation to bowl on any track and especially, considering how well he bowled in WI which will be similar conditions to India. They then go on to say about Botha, 'He is a fantastic offspinner, a superb fielder,' who went for $950,000 is bit of a contradiction. But anyway, one man who will be happy is Andy Flower, I think England benefited from not being involved in the IPL last year so from that viewpoint it's no bad thing.

It's probably good for Swann that he doesn't play in this competition, batsman smashing him could dent his confidence and force him to bowl flatter.

"This value will make Taylor considerably wealthier. In theory, he pockets the US$1m for his move away from the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who were beaten out of the bidding by Rajasthan. However, the sum can be reduced considerably by a number of conditions.

They include a deduction of 20 per cent if the player's team does not make the Champions League. A further 20 per cent can be deducted on a pro rata basis if players are available but not selected. If players are injured during the tournament, salaries can also be reduced by 50 per cent.

If players fail to appear at any of 10 promotional appearances, 10 per cent of their salary is deducted - but, in a worst case scenario, Taylor could have his figure reduced to the vicinity of US$600,000. If he's injured, that could scale down further to US$500,000."

I have always wondered about the deductions and now I've finally got the answer.

So out of the 3 English players signed so far, 1's a Yarp, 1's Irish and the other one looks like a girl. Pretty sad state of affairs for them.
Of all the Australians signed so far, none of them won the Ashes. I know which camp I'd rather be in.

Not that the BCCI would ever, ever, allow a union to take hold but if it existed, that injury rule would be the biggest point of contention.

I think the non-selection one's a bit dodgy as well to be honest. Say team A bids $750k for a player to outbid team B who bid $700k. Team B had a spot that the player would've filled in every game but team A ply the player a couple of times. Why should the player lose out?

Yea, truthfully all of them are a bit dodgy except the part about missing matches due to international commitments - that's the only one I agree with. Well, that and being asked to appear for promotional events, that too makes sense given the nature of the league.

But if you might take a 50% cut if you're injured - are you really going to put in that extra effort to drive, or bowl at full pace? I mean we're not talking about chump change - someone like Gambhir could potentially lose $1.2 million dollars because he dove at the boundary. That's ludicrous and really I think backfires if they want the players to play hard from them.

I could understand a clause that wouldn't pay them if they came in injured into the tournament, via injures sustained elsewhere, but during? That's just stupid.

Chris Gayle went unsold, which was a shock for many. Why did franchises turn a blind eye to a mercurial, proven match-winner?
Easy one - it's due mainly to his unavailability this year. West Indies are busy during the next two IPL seasons. They'll be hosting Pakistan this year and play Australia at home and England away in 2012. And his base price of $400,000 worked against him - he would not be a bargain punt, as some others could be.

Now stfu everyone tbh

I knew that West Indies had international commitments, I thought he pulled of a West Indies contract to play IPL. Haha suck it ****.

EDIT: The suck it **** was aimed at Gayle, not you Jono.
