Lol? Like most ATGs, Imran retired far before his team logically would have wanted him too. He could easily have averaged 35 with bat and got through a few overs of accurate meds until '95 for Pakistan and '00 for Lahore.
Um he was pushing 40 when he retired.

And he was still good.
Sure but it's clear he was on his last legs physically. Was taking shots for his shoulder throughout the WC 92. There is no way he would have been up to a full length England tour that followed the WC.

If you can't retire at 40 and not be considered selfish, I don't know when you can retire.

Stop bowling then. Still class with the bat.

If you played over 20 years for your country internationally, you are past the point where you owe anything more to your country on the field.
This back-and-forth has really come full circle from claiming Imran Khan was unselfish because "if he ever felt he couldn't perform at optimum level ... he would quit".

Him still performing when he retired for other reasons is not a contradiction to saying if he would retire due to non-performance.

You were claiming the latter was unusually selfless behaviour. You excuse the former because cricketers tend to be selfish in that respect. They're certainly contrasting arguments.

Selfishness is wanting to stay in the team even if you aren't capable of contributing. That is actively harming the team. That is what Kohli is doing.

Imran retiring at 40 years old after winning a WC after a 22 year international career is not selfish in any way whatsoever. At that point you have given your all for your country and no reasonable person can expect more from you. If you can't see the difference between that and say retiring in your early 30s half way through a career then I'm sorry I question your judgment.

The only players who I would consider selfish are people who deliberately skip tours, or people who retire halfway through a series.

What about those that chase records rather than results?

For example, I consider Lara's 400 a really selfish innings.
Well I was more talking about in terms of retirement etc. I’m not 100% sure about how the pitch condition etc. was in Lara’s 400. Its not like he deliberately batted slowly for the milestone either. I know also the series was definitely not in the balance.

As I said, I was meaning in terms of the ending of careers, rather than playstyle.
I think professional cricketers at some point with a prolonged stretch of bad form should admit to themselves when they don't merit being on the team. Maybe I am thinking too highly of them.

You are thinking too highly of them. Almost none ever has the insight (moreso I will argue have their own ego) to admit that maybe they are finished and can no longer provide like they used to.

I dunno man. Cricketers are not that dumb. I think for many they are just scared of retirement and being out of the public limelight and not having that high.

Meh, I don't think that's totally true for most but the biggest of narcs and spotlight lovers. I believe most of the time it's a case of them feeling they can bounce back/they aren't finished yet and just score in the next game
