Can anybody explain how some teams (Chennai, Kolkatta, Hyd, Mohali) were allowed to exceed their allotted 5million budget? They will have to drop a few players now (and pay them 25%), won't they?

Basically the way Cricket Chat usually works in regards to these things is we have a thread discussing the specifics of and within the competition itself, like this one and other threads discussing the principles and theories of it in general. This is the former.

If a player doesn't play in the tournament, or plays for less than 4 of the matches in 2008, only 25% of the player's auctioned price will contribute towards the salary cap.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but posts and posters who do nothing other than put down something are usually requested to not post any further, as it's causing a detrimental effect to the thread and those who do want to make constructive posts or discuss something, feel that those posters and posts shouldn't be here. As I said, it's similar to the T20IBS, and I don't see any reason why a seperate "IPLIBS" shouldn't be opened. Would be far preferrable to ruining this thread.

Super Kings is an absolutely awful nickname. Why Super Kings? Why not just Kings?
That's not even the worst part. They ran a bloody SMS contest to get the name. Obvious that it is a case of deciding the winner and then running the contest, I feel.

Hell, even my entry was better.. Chennai Gillies.. Gilly, in Tamil (our native language in Chennai) means a highly skilled, smart, and a talented-in-what-he-does, brave guy. Sorta like "Gun" in native English usage... Imagine Chennai Gillies lead by Gilly..... :-O

I can stretch my brain to understand how Kaif > Younis, Ishant > Zaheer, Raina > M Hussey for the IPL in terms of valuation. What I cannot fathom is the universe in which Kaif = 3X Younis, Ishant = 2X Zaheer and Raina = 2X M Hussey etc.
It seems that Kaif is better looking(marketable) than Younis,
Ishant is fit and in form while Zaheer is injured.
Raina is available while the Aussies may not be available, besides Raina is marketable too as Hussy is an unknown commodity in India as far as his non-cricket abilities go. While Raina has already chalked up quite a few ads.

Except Mohali (which picked Sanga, Mahela,Yuvraj, Sarwan for batting and Lee, Irfan,Sreesanth,Chawla, Powar for bowling and Katich as all rounder and appears to be a surprisingly balanced team), the other teams appear to be a random collection of individuals.
Kaif>3x Younis probably because Kaif is an Indian player and will be useful in drawing crowds, marketing. Indian players are infinitely more valuable in the Indian context. What use is having another foreign player when you can play only 4 as well. That Kaif is actually one of the best one day players in the country isn't bad at all. Younis might also be suffering because he might play the Pak-Aus series (not sure if that is the reason but it might be).

Ishant = 2x Zaheer as Ishant is a very hot commodity right now after his recent exploits. It is like Yuvraj was hot after his ICC knock out exploits in 2000. Given how he has not been sold to the Indian market till now, whatever he promotes will earn the franchises a fair bit of money. Zaheer Khan, for all his brilliant performances in tests, doesn't catch the fancy like a young Ishant does right now.

Raina = 2x M Hussey as Raina is again, an Indian who is not a bad T20 player at all. His explosiveness can mean that if he makes runs, there is a huge chance he might, it can be a good draw apart from attracting sponsors. Like Kaif, he is not a bad player either.

The surprising insane money for Indian players like say Manoj Tiwari has reasoning too. Most of the owners of these teams have a lot of money. They don't mind taking the risk of spending a few extra dollars on Indians who might become stars. These contracts are for 3 years and so if even 1 of their manouvers clicks, they would have struck gold. A bit of a loss on some Indian players (and most of even these young guns wont mean loss deals as they can use the likes of Kaifs and Rainas in team ads with big stars in ads and build the team brand along with building these younger players) isn't a massive risk considering how much they can earn on a few players who strike gold.

Some one like Ishant is worth is weight in gold right now. They aren't thinking 3 years in terms of players like this who are hot right now.

Because the BCCI introduced a cap, I reckon that these players were under sold. I am sure many players would have sold for much more had they not imposed the cap on what each team can spend in the auction. So while every one seems shocked at the amount of money these players have commanded, the ground reality is that a fair bit of international players the world over (the Indian players to a large extent) are terribly under paid by their boards compared to the prices they can command on the open market.

The boards like New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies are in no position to pay the players the insane levels of money they can command from some thing like an IPL for 6 weeks work. This is another reason why the ICC has been stupid to not allow a window for the IPL in their Future Tours Programme. They could have curtailed what is essentially a menace for them. Instead, they encourage it to face possible head on collisions which would stretch the players into asking Kolkata or Sri Lanka.

How come there are none at all from England? County contracts are violated by IPL?
I am guessing that it has to do with the English county and international season. If the IPL had started at the same time as the Australian season, I am not sure how many Australians would be available either. This is the first year of the IPL and as the IPL is going the official route of adhering to international commitments and as the IPL is new, players don't want to go out of their way to play for some thing like the IPL in the place of their national commitments from a country like England which may not be as big a power in world cricket as it once was, but still has importance in terms of domestic and international games for it's players there.

So the money is for a 3 year contract rather than for 1 season?

If it is then the very top are earning good money but even the lower down top players are not earning anything to really get excited about.

Regarding the process. I like the auction idea. Free market and players will find their own value, even if I think some are being bidded on by guys that apparently have little idea. Its their money though.

This venture will probably be a success. I dont think it has any relevance (aprt from maybe the important factor of destroying the ICL).

Good luck to those involved. As someone said, you dont have to watch if you dont want to. I will not be tuning in but Im sure many others will.

I'm unsure why so many people are having a go at the IPL in particular.

I, in fact, praise those involved in getting the IPL off the ground. The ICL was never going to be given approval by the ICC or BCCI for that matter, and this is one way of keeping players away from the rebel league and ensuring they're still available for international duties (for those who haven't retired).

Or would some posters have preferred if Mike Hussey, Ricky Ponting, Brendon McCullum et al signed for the ICL and we lost them from international cricket instead? Because when there's money bandied around to the level we've had over the last few months, it's a given that some will give in to the massive amounts of cash.

Yeah, pretty much my point. This thread is for discussing the IPL itself, others can be made for slagging it off etc. Like the Twenty20 WC offical threads were for discussing matches and the event and other threads like T20IBS and others could discuss the concept on a whole and people who didn't like it could complain about it there and not ruin it for everyone who did enjoy it.

Good on the man, always a humble individual.

In other news, I will be joining the Chennai bandwagon mainly cos its the place of my birth.
At least some one is showing some kind of loyalty...

And VVS has always been that kind of a man, I guess. :)
