Yes, he automatically makes 15% higher than the next highest.

Good point, though what about the two year limit? Isn't he considered a player from Australia for two years after retirement?

If not, then the apocalypse isn't near - it's here.
I believe that will only apply to future players/signings. So hypothetically Morne Morkel could not retire in two months time and be able to play IPL cricket (until 2011).

I dunno why people are picking on Afridi. When you're limited to 4 foreigners you want guys who can do as much as possible, Afridi won't win games single-handed with the bat but he can certainly swing games your way, I'll expect his bowling to be right up there with the best in terms of effectiveness and obviously he's got a good arm in the outfield. Personally I think Afridi went pretty cheap.

Me too, he was a bargain. He's just easy to pick on, this board loves it.

He was brilliant in the 20/20 World Cup, has marketing power, and is a genuine match-winner with both bat and ball... why the hell would you not want him? I'd pick him over Ponting, Kallis, Dravid, Yousuf, McGrath, Mike Hussey etc. any day.

There are more people in this thread than most Test series. :(
Because its new, and its interesting.

You're trying to bring down something and then use the test cricket line for emotive value.

This is doing wonders for the promotion of India as a country if nothing else.

I think most people dislike him because he represents the 'hit and pray' bits & pieces type of cricketer who is lauded by people, and admittedly is effective in the short versions, but does not possess traditional cricketing skills valuable in the five day arena. So people here (like me) who value Test cricket and Test cricketers kind of use him as a punching bag for our frustrations regarding the shorter games.

Whether you like it or not, this is a pretty historic day for cricket. I'm surprised there aren't more people here, really.

Don't disagree with either.

Still.

That's fine, I'm hardly his biggest fan.

But business is business, money is money, and winning is winning. You choose players in your best interests. Particularly when the people putting the capital down for the auctions are the ones who face all the risk.

Its very easy to sit in a living room and whinge about how he's ugly to watch, or a dickhead etc. But if I was in the same position as those with the $$$ I'd do the exact same thing.

I am wondering if there were no maximum caps then where to what levels would have these auctions gone.

Indeed he is a steal, considering unlike the Cameron White’s and Albie Morkel’s of this world he can actually bowl well and almost guarantee four good overs. Morkel will bowl well once in every three games whilst White would be a liability to even send down two overs.

Those who will not be picked by any team will be compensated by the board atleast at their reserve prices.

Buchanan for Kolkata

'News is filtering in that John Buchanan has confirmed he will coach the Kolkata team in the IPL. Buchanan said one of his main roles as franchise coach would be to blend different cultures into a team, AAP reported.

"I don't ever see that as a problem, once players merge together as a side you are actually trying to achieve a result," Buchanan said. "What will be interesting is that you will have Australian players, Indian players, New Zealand players, Sri Lankan players, Pakistani players ... and they could all end up in the one franchise.

"That will make for an interesting cultural exchange no doubt ... and that will be one of the exciting parts, bringing together cultural differences in a very short period of time

Haha, I'm not enjoying this at all, but it's quite compelling in a perverse way. It's not everyday you see cricketers auctioned off in public like gypsy slaves from the 15th Century.
AWTA.

Bracken and Steyn together has made me a fan alone.

Haha, that's a pretty sweet deal. Some players get their reserve price (e.g Akmal) for playing a 6 week tournament. Some players get theirs for doing absolutely sweet **** all.
