Indian Domestic Season 2011/2012

we got ourselves new HDMI cables and willow tv subscriptions to watch this tour.. Wishing we hadn't done this now. :)
Buddy, we all go through that dont worry.. I took a day off from work to watch the Sydney 2010 test match. My friend arranged a big party during the 2011 semi final, a huge 50 inch LCD, drinks, food, everything. I left when Razzaq got out without having dinner :)

TP Sudhindra has played just 25 games, and needs to play twice as much to be in contention for a place in the national side. Five seasons of domestic cricket, as also A-team tours all over the world, will help him a lot more than a premature promotion to the national side, which has been the undoing of many a promising youngster, and still is.

Stuart Binny is the top all-rounder this season. Yes, you read it right. Let that take a while to sink in. Someone whose selection in the state side was virtually forced, until he changed over to ICL, only to come back to the domestic scene, is now Karnataka's top performer. Unfortunately, you can't pick this bloke as he has too little to show, and there are better all-rounders across the country, who, sadly, had a disappointing season.

The top six Elite teams threw up a lot of surprises. I expected one of Mumbai, Karnataka and TN to win the event, but Karnataka were hampered by poor fielding, particularly dreadful wicketkeeping, where catch after catch went down. Haryana are the only team to win the quarters, while the others made it on leads. They have a very slight edge over Rajasthan, with a better strike bowler- both Mishra and Pankaj are struggling to chip wickets this season. However, the Mumbai/TN semi will decide who will win this season's Ranji Trophy, barring yet another upset.

It is a fair enough rule of thumb to have 50 FC games, but don't you think it is a tad arbitrary to way you are enforcing it so stringently?

Let's make the Ranji Trophy more relevant. Far too much importance is attached to age certificates, and by a long shot, the IPL. It's no mean feat, completing fifty games. Badrinath, Jaffer and Mazumdar, have finished over a hundred. Was all of that in vain? We see greenhorns like Mukund, Kohli and Vijay getting India caps. Let's just hope not.

Rahane was introduced seemingly late into the national side. I'd say he's been introduced at just the right time. Likewise Rohit Sharma.

Sudhindra is having a dream run so far, and his best performances have come in what's suppose to be the tougher Elite league. Tougher, because of the flat decks all around. Let's see how long he keeps it up. One poor season will show where he's found wanting, so he can work on it in the next.

We don't want another Mithun case, where they pick a player after his debut season goes well, but he's far short of international standard.

The Haryana/Rajasthan pitch a minefield. Rajasthan is 89 all out (Harshal Patel took eight for Haryana, again) and yet they're on top with Haryana at 31/6.

Now Rituraj Singh takes seven wickets. Slender lead for Haryana, but Rajasthan have stabilised. Here's a report of the proceedings so far. Excessive fog and dew at the ground.

Elsewhere, Mumbai struggled to dismiss TN, who scored 359. Dhawal Kulkarni, struggling with injury, has bowled 41 overs, with just two wickets, while Sandhu had a decent outing, with five, a second time this Ranji. Mumbai are in trouble at 36/3, with Suryakumar Yadav at the crease. We know how the lad's performed so far. Hopefully there's a repeat. Here's a report of the match. Poor bowling by spinners and a dodgy decision.

Very fierce shoot-out in the Rajasthan/Haryana match. Sachin Rana gets into the act and takes four. Harshal completes a big ten. Rajasthan all out for 192. In the other game, TN are all over Mumbai, who are struggling at 121/6. Will their famed lower order bail them out this time? Kulkarni is at the crease, and Ramesh Powar is yet to step in, as laso Ankeet Chavan, centurion in the last game. Good semis on the cards, but instead, the cricket channels only show Big Bash League and stock footage. STAR cricket need to launch a bid for domestic cricket coverage.

In other news, Yo Mahesh and Amit Mishra have been getting wickets and runs. While still distant from the top three (and number three, Pankaj Singh, is himself distant from the top two, now out of action), both Mishra and Mahesh have been chipping away wickets cheaply, and getting runs. While neither are over four hundred runs (Roger Binny Jr is over 600), they're doing well lower down. Guess what, Pankaj Singh is also trying hard. However, this should be the norm and not the highlight, so that there are plenty of options for India. We see bowlers with no batting ability representing the country.

Remember Meryck Pringle? The highlight of his career were his phenomenal bowling against the West Indians in the 1992 World Cup. Indian fans will remember that bouncer bowled by Srinath (in a rather painful tour of SA) that hit him so hard, and had him in so much pain, that Srinath (on seeing him in such a state) started feeling dizzy and also needed medical attention. Rajasthan cricketers, however, will remember him fondly for the assistance he provided when they struggled early in the season. He conducted a fast bowlers' meeting, sorted out bowling actions and didn't overcoach the bowlers- just told them to enjoy their game. They enjoy his company. Surely, a blueprint for coaches across India.

Speaking of Harshal Patel, he lives outside India actually(In USA, i think) and comes to India for the cricket season. His parents left India in his under - 17 days.

Robin Bist and Naman Ojha are two significant performers this season. Both players have had a really good Elite season, better than their aggregate record, and they've largely played in Plate. Ojha is relevant as a cover for Dhoni, particularly in Tests, while Bist should be playing for India A. If India A is ever sent out on tour again. Plenty of younger players (Mukund, Pawan, Sidhana, Mandeep, not-so-young Parvinder) did well, and should be in that development side.

The bowling can have Sudhindra and Dinda up front, with Yo Mahesh following up. KP Appanna has stepped up nicely in the flattened Ranji season, and may be a spin prospect. Hopefully he's not a flat-pelter like Ojha, Jadeja or Sharma. Among the lesser performers, Iqbal Abdulla had a poor season, but being a steady spinner and a capable batsman, he's still in the running. Plenty of bowling, batting and balance, but let them get a tour first.

Amit Mishra, Badrinath, Irfan, Pankaj and Uthappa had a good (albeit unspectacular) Ranji so far, and should be back in the reserves, and in the Board XI matches.

Tamil Nadu vs Rajasthan Ranji Final tomorrow.

Rajasthan with their flat pitch strategy have reached the final 2 times in a row now, but the final is being played at the Chepauk so, should be interesting with Tamil Nadu favorites for me.

The BCCI morons terminating the Neo Sports contract at this stage means the game is not being broadcast anywhere though, like with the Semi's, except some sort of poor telecast on the BCCI website.

Watching this Chepauk pitch leaves little doubt about the sources of our problems abroad. IPL has nothing to do with it.

I wish they would move to the bonus point system of county cricket (and apply it to both innings) instead of the 1st innings lead systems, which grossly undervalues anything done in the 2nd innings.

This alone would improve the quality of cricket across the board by encouraging good pitches.

Yeah, not seen the match but seems a really flat wicket.

Rajasthan could again be winning based on first innings lead.
