Yeah but you'd assume Gambhir would be the one more likely to punish the bad bowling? Chopra was always a conservative and very patient batsman. Gambhir generally the opposite. Just weird seeing Chopra having a strike rate over 5, let alone 85 lol

That's a very interesting question you've got there. Several reasons exist for that. There are some cases where they're not that good, or they're just not needed. Dinesh Mongia and Venugopal Rao have good domestic figures, but we've seen they're not that good at the international level, though some still are retained in the team. Off-spinner Kulamani Parida is one of the best bowlers in action right now, but the team doesn't need a specialist spinner. With the focus on extra pace, swing bowlers like Gagandeep and wicket-to-wicket seamers like Paul are left out.

Regionalism is dead. We don't find selections done on that now. What is more annoying, at times frustrating, is the conservatism displayed by the selectors. They seem to be going in the opposite direction, when you expect the team to go forward. They're jsut too afraid to take risks, as seen in the Chairman's last comment on domestic cricket.

North Zone look set to take a decent first innings lead against Sri Lanka A, currently they are 137/1 in reply to 296. Chopra is on 69 and Ricky on 47, these two are both batting pretty well. Rajesh Sharma went for a few when he was bowling but also picked up 4 wickets.

Chopra ends up with a huge total of 188. Ricky also puts in a ton of runs from his bat. North Zone are 554-5.

The Lankans definitely are a bowler short on a flat deck. Mithun Manhas was unlucky to miss out just like Gambhir, but every other batsman has scoerd big. There were two centuries, Yashpal Singh scored 77, Mahesh Rawat scored 96 and is still at the crease, while strike bowler Joginder scored 70 at a strike rate of 80 with seven fours and a six. He's clearly running hard between the wickets. Stock seamer Sachin Rana, a batting mainstay for Haryana last season, was out for zero. North should declare next morning; they have two whole days to bowl the Lankans out.

Does anyone see a chance for Mahesh Rawat in the Indian team? The wicketkeeper-batsman position is almost locked, with Dhoni reasonably settled and Karthik, a strong contender, with more experience. Rawat has scored heaps of runs in the last season and averages over 40 and he's scored big here too. However, he is yet another opening batsman who's taken to wicketkeeping and he may be deficient behind the stumps, like Rahul Dravid, and his strike rate is not at all impressive. What are your comments on this?

Rawat seems like a good prospect for the Indian team in the test matches. He hasn't done much in OD Cricket but his FC isn't bad. Already has 2 100s in his name and will hopefully get his third tomorrow. Has a strike rate of a test player, but wouldn't consider him an option for ODI. If he can get runs in the Ranji Trophy, he could give Karthik a run for his money.

BTW I'm most likely going to be back in time for the 3rd day of the first Delhi match, so I'm most likely gonna end up there.
