Indian domestic season 2006-07

It was a first day wicket, it was having fairly good carry in the first half of the day and Murali Karthik was doing a good job. The faster bowlers didn't have a that good first spell and were brought back - a move which paid off. I am not aware of any injury and don't think it had any thing to do with injuries.

Harvinder Singh is still leading the Railways attack with JP Yadav. He's been getting wickets at a decent average, but hasn't run through batting sides with ease to make the Indian side. Moreover, his small size is a weakness, and he isn't any faster than medium-pace. He's a decent bowler, but lack of power and pace may keep him out for some time. His fielding has been very good for a long time and his batting has improved a bit, and he's still a key player for Railways.

Nehra, as we all know, has been sidelined due to injury. As for Ratra, that case is a laughable one. He led Haryana to victory in the Plate league from behind the stumps, and had them promoted to the Elite league. However, the selectors thought he was 'short of runs' and 'dropped crucial catches', so they dropped him and had reserve opener Mahesh Rawat wicketkeeping. Not surprisingly, the team that rolled over most teams with Ratra behidn the stumps had difficulty getting 20 wickets quite often. When he was in action, he was the fastest wicketkeeper in India and had the best reflexes among all India prospects. Rawat, fine batsman that he is, may be yet another futile attempt in the domestic scene to unearth a wicketkeeper-batsman.
How good are Railways Arjun? I guess Harvinder seems like a guy sounds like a guy who will take wickets against the lower order to keep up with a decent average.?

I see your point on Rawat, he sounds as though he is a stop gap measure and I think Ratra will be the better option.

The 15-man South Zone squad has been named.

I'm not too sure about Asnodkar as an opening batsman, but he will likely be opening with Uthappa, with Laxman, Badrinath, Rao and Rayudu to follow in the middle-order. Karthik is obviously the keeper and a four-man attack of Sreesanth-Balaji-Yomahesh-Kumble is probably a better idea than a long tail including Pragyan Ojha.
Tell me Asnodkar won't get a match. He's an opener from Goa, and may be a quota selection. His batting average, despite playing in Plate, is quite low– even a few bowlers frmo other teams average so much, and he's a specialist batsman.

That is a reasonably strong side, but the absence of all-rounders is disappointing. Vidyut from TN opens the batting and can also turn his arm over for a long time. Karnataka have Stuart Binny, Gaurav Dhiman and Chandrashekhar Raghu, all of whom are very young. Selections like Ibrahim Khaleel and Pragyan Ojha are there just to make up the numbers, nothing else.

Maybe they're trying to give their pacers a workout, because they're the national prospects in that team. They've had an unimpressive Challenger series or are coming back, so that maybe why they were bowled longer.

Harvinder is a little workhorse, who'll bowl excess overs and somehow pick up a wicket. He bowls a lot for Railways. They've reached the final thrice in the recent past, and on two occasions to draw with a first-innings lead, so I don't say they won either. It was rather unfortunate that they were relegated to Plate division, despite having at least five international prospects with them, because of first-innings leads they conceded, while Delhi, who lost more matches, stayed on. This is one team of ordinary players who come together for extraordinary performances. Every player there serves a purpose. Training and lodging facilities for this team are dreadfully inadequate, and can take quite a toll on some players, so it's good to see them come so far three times.

About the attempts to find a wicketkeeper batsman all over the county, we've seen several desperate measures taken, such as having Hyderabad keeper Khaleel bat anywhere between 1 and 4, then ex-Haryana opener Maninder Bisla wicketkeeping for HP, then an unfortunate revolving door policy with Mumbai's wicketkeepers that kept a genuine contender (some may say an India prospect) Vinayak Samant out of the team, though thankfully he's back.

I did watch portions of the repeat telecast.Srivastava bowled in 125-135 range and pitched every where from full to short to good length in different periods. It showed a bit of lack in planning. He strayed a bit and not much. He is 25 now and I doesn't look as if he will improve in performance or speed exceptionally, without which he would be punished a bit internationally. A good asset to have domestically though.

Two players who did impress me:

Badrinath
- Was in exceptional form in the previous Ranji season and was the same in the tour to Australia with India A. Has good technique and the patience and didn't look in trouble at all when he batted, punishing the balls which gave him any chance to exploit. His fielding is good as well at first sight (as mentioned regarding his forward short leg fielding).

Praveen Kumar
- Aggressive batsman though he has to improve on his average. The potential exists. Bowling wise, he is at 125-135 which is great for some one whom people are slating as not among the main bowlers. He has played very less so far and will be interesting to see how he develops. Definitely some one who can play one day cricket for India down the years.
You've mentioned the pace of the bowler twice, and frankly, you'd be lucky to find bowlers who can consistently bowl over 140k in India. It's surprising to find two or more in Sri Lanka, but none of the pacers who have played for India have been able to maintain that figure. That said, most leading strike bowlers in the game today bowl in the 125-135k range. They just have to put it to good use, by getting movement through the air or off the pitch, and getting the ball in the business area, while the fast bowler does his own thing.

Pravin Kumar was the highest wicket-taker in Ranji last season, jointly with Ramesh Powar, and his team won the Ranji Trophy in that season. Definitely a prospect, and his berserk hitting adds a lot of value to his place in the side, and will also lessen the batting load on Irfan and Dhoni, while Sehwag can play like a proper batsman. His no-ball problem has to get fixed first.

It's surprising that Badrinath hasn't been a national prospect except recently. As a reserve middle-order batsman or a substitute fielder, he is quite a good pick, especially in ODI's. Maybe the team doesn't need one more batsman, but he's still better than Badani and Dinesh Mongia.

QUESTION: How fast were Zaheer and VRV today?

Even if some one is comparable to international pace regardless of what that pace is, it is not enough. For example, some one like Srivastava would get punished because of the poor balls he bowls. Praveen definitely is a prospect but he has played very few matches and let us see what happens of him.

Badri - yeah he is very good. Also, he is fast gaining in reputation and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets picked in the next 12 months for India. People feel that he is more of a test prospect generally given his good technique but he can attack as well and is a useful fielder and can be considered for ODI cricket in the future too..

Was mostly to do with a first day pitch to be honest.

Look at Asnodkar's average from the last Ranji season. I must admit I didn't know much about him but the average does seem to justify his selection. Vidyut should definitely be here, but guys like Dhiman are quite new and haven't achieved much in domestic cricket yet. Khaleel is another guy who had a good average last season (I think) but may not be so great. Ojha is a young spinner with decent figures so no problem with him making it. The alternative is Ramkumar, so this move won't really hurt.

Zaheer worked up mediocre pace (134-135) regularly as did VRV. VRV was impressive in his later spell (or one of them) when he bowled 137 or so and really troubled the batsmen. Now 137 is nothing special, but the commentators were acting as if he was really working up special pace and saying that 137 is very good on this kind of pitch. Not sure what that means, but overall VRV and Zaheer bowled well. Balaji was fine, but I don't rate him as a very penetrative bowler at the moment.

What are your comments on the scheduling of the Duleep trophy? I say it's a mistake putting it ahead of Ranji, because you don't have the right players in place then.

Strange putting it before the Ranji, as players who will emerge this season have no chance of getting picked. Ideally the season should run something like this:

Challenger - Irani - Ranji - Duleep - Ranji One Day - Deodhar - Twenty20

They can mix the Ranji and ROD matches, so that the ROD matches are played at FC grounds in good playing conditions, not in club/college grounds or marshlands or hailstormed hillstations.

Agreed, would be an improvement. Last year in Bangladesh the system was that there would be a first-class match followed by a one-dayer, which I think worked quite well.

IIRC, the Duleep Trophy matches are supposed to begin tomorrow or something like that. Why haven't the squads been named/announced (apart from South Zone)? Pretty pathetic coverage here from Cricinfo.

CONSPIRACY!!! There is no live scorecard on CricInfo, and I asked the local cable operators to run NEO Sports, and they said they won't run it if there is no live match.
