All team sports coaches should be like 'headmasters'. Players should feel slightly intimidated by them.

Too bad we'll never know what's actually going on wrt this scenario though.

Such has been the approach, the official said, that some of the injuries that have ruled players out during Kumble's tenure were not strictly cricket related. "Kumble was pushing hard. The bulk of them [injuries] are non-cricketing injuries. One of the players was stressed out. So the team is not a happy lot."
This is the problem obvsly.

The part in bold is ridiculous. One or two is acceptable with a tough approach. Bulk is not.

Keep in mind this is inside info from some gossipy official. Maybe Kumble was a bit mean to him/her once.

We will when Kohli writes his autobiography and trashes everyone who's ever played cricket ala Sachin.

Whatever it takes!!!
I just read on Sportskeeda that Kumble apparently had a whatsapp group with his media friends and was feeding them "inside scoops". If true, this is extremely deplorable. But there is just no way we can ever find out if this is true unless someone substantiates it.

Just looks like a lot of things going wrong here.

We do have to bear in mind though, that Kumble pushed for pay hikes for himself and the players. BCCI usually does not like that and they may just be planting all of these stories because of that.

This is reminding me so much of Waqar's period as Pakistan coach. Heard all these stories before - too strict, makes them run too much, strenuous training regime is getting the boys injured, players are stressed.

These aren't part of the reported problems with Kumble though.

Senior players in the Indian cricket team, led by captain Virat Kohli, are not happy with head coach Anil Kumble’s methods of guiding the side, a report by the Times of India on Tuesday claimed. According to unnamed sources quoted in the report, players were happier with former team director Ravi Shastri’s methods, with Kumble being referred to as “a hard task-master”.

A separate report on Tuesday in The Hindu quoted an unnamed official as saying, “People in the corridors of power have been told that Kumble is overbearing and doesn’t give freedom to the players.” Shastri, on the other hand, shared an excellent rapport with the players during his year-long tenure as team director.

Kohli and Kumble had differences of opinion during the India-Australia Test series, the reports said. Kumble had reportedly backed the inclusion of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, which Kohli was unaware of and was taken by surprise. The report in The Hindu claimed that Kohli rejected Kumble’s proposal of fielding Yadav in the third Test of the series in Ranchi.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Advisory Committee, comprising former greats Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, who had appointed Kumble head coach last year, have been given the responsibility of mediating between Kumble and the players.

Vinod Rai, the chairman of the Supreme Court-mandated Committee of Administrators, is also likely to meet the three-member advisory committee to discuss the matter. Kohli reportedly spoke with Ganguly to discuss the matter after India’s Champions Trophy warm-up match against New Zealand on Sunday.

This recent furore comes at a time when India are in the United Kingdom, seeking to defend their Champions Trophy title. On May 25, the BCCI caused some consternation when they posted a job opening for the position of head coach in the men’s cricket team. The BCCI had then clarified that Kumble would be a direct entry to the selection process, while Kohli said the Indian cricket board was following standard procedure.

However, amidst speculation that the BCCI was unhappy with Kumble for his part in leading a demand for a pay hike for India’s cricketers and support staff, an India Today report on Monday claimed that players were unhappy with Kumble’s “overbearing attitude”. On the same day, the Indian Express also reported that Virender Sehwag had been told to apply for the post with the COA being conveyed of the dressing room’s unhappiness with Kumble.

Kuldeep Yadav had a good say in India winning the last match and hence the series. Kumble what a bastard!

Tbf this was handled quite well by the players and Kohli. If there is a problem, this is exactly the manner in which you'd want them to report and act. No leaks and no moans during the year. Quite professional.

Wrote on the topic:

Cricket and a Cuppa: Anil Kumble and the Art of the Coach

This week saw the start of the eight edition of the Champions Trophy. A tournament which started as a knock out in Dhaka in 1998, it has had a storied past. The week has also seen rumblings about a controversy regarding Anil Kumble as coach of the Indian cricket team. The BCCI has taken in fresh applications for the coach and Kumble is part of the process and among the six people who have applied for the job.

There are topics which emerged like Kumble being a strict disciplinarian and fitness freak which didn't sit well with some of the players. Anand Vasu brushed aside the whole controversy as Chinese Whispers. We should probably not indulge in it then.

I will indulge any ways. When the rumours first emerged, it was said that the reason Kumble will be booted is that he had backed the players for the pay hike and the BCCI was not happy with it. Later, reports started emerging that players were not happy with him including Kohli.

However, no one has commented any thing officially. It would have helped if the process for the coach had happened after the Champions Trophy. It would have also helped if Kohli had made some sort of statement backing Kumble regardless of whether he is happy with him or not to shut down the whispers once and for all.

One aspect which troubles me is that BCCI kept Duncan Fletcher as coach till his tenure expired. They could have sacked him earlier but they chose not to do so. For months later, they had Shastri as a figurehead in the team, some one Kohli seemed quite happy with. Yet, they went for Kumble to the utter dejection of Shastri who had also applied for the job.

The coach is an important position. The successful runs of the team has coincided with great coaches - John Wright and Gary Kirsten. We cannot play musical chairs with this post. Depending upon the player and fan, one thinks the coach has more of a management role or more of a coaching role. This shouldn't be the case either.

In England, the roles are defined. Andrew Strauss is director of operations and there are coaches which work on their own roles. Andrew Strauss has remained the director of operations for a while now and it has lead to a functioning which has lead to some sort of system for the English team. Players are not picked and dropped for a game usually and it's mostly for a season or series before they are let go. There are so many aspects. Why do we not have such roles. We have appointed Ganguly, Dravid and Tendulkar as part of a committee but how often do they actually meet?

What I call for is some structure, more than any thing. Let's have basic qualifications and track record for coaching the Indian national team. We had a fiasco when Kapil Dev was coach, similarly with Greg Chappell (whose coaching experiences with smaller sides were quite ordinary). Let's bring in better coaches, better administration process. Let's give due respect to each position. Let's have players talk about issues with the media and not have them mumb about it to give rise to these Chinese Whispers. I am sure we can.

Guha's seven page letter pointing out flaws in the system is interesting, at least what I have read of it from media reports.

Maybe he is hb. I don't care about that too much. Some of the points he raised are good though.

I'd say it's the sanctimonious asshole trait in him that has permitted us this peek into the state of affairs at the BCCI. Silver lining etc.

While I agree with his criticism, I do not understand how he is absolved of incompetence here. He was in position to address these issues, and he did not. Yes, Rome was burning; but Nero was annointed not to list the damages, but to fight the fire.
