Close, GI, close.IT would be fair to say that India was the best team of the tournament. In onedayer anything can happen and Lanka might have bowled India out for less than 222 had the rain not stopped the play BUT the chances for a Lankan win was far less than an Indian victory.
I was most impressed by India throughout the tournament. Equally, I was impressed with the bowling of Sri Lanka (I believe they bowled their opponents out in each game up to the final). That's why it was so sad that the showdown did not fully materialise.
A test of the 'irresistable force meeting the immovable object' scenario was not to be. Sri Lanka had posted reasonable targets on both days (more than reasonable on day 1), now would they have been able to winkle out the star-studded Indian batting line-up?
My assessment was that day 1 would have given them a 70-30 chance, day 2 30-70 at best (remember that Murali had tweaked a groin or a hamstring). In short, honours even.
