ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka

IT would be fair to say that India was the best team of the tournament. In onedayer anything can happen and Lanka might have bowled India out for less than 222 had the rain not stopped the play BUT the chances for a Lankan win was far less than an Indian victory.
Close, GI, close.

I was most impressed by India throughout the tournament. Equally, I was impressed with the bowling of Sri Lanka (I believe they bowled their opponents out in each game up to the final). That's why it was so sad that the showdown did not fully materialise.

A test of the 'irresistable force meeting the immovable object' scenario was not to be. Sri Lanka had posted reasonable targets on both days (more than reasonable on day 1), now would they have been able to winkle out the star-studded Indian batting line-up?

My assessment was that day 1 would have given them a 70-30 chance, day 2 30-70 at best (remember that Murali had tweaked a groin or a hamstring). In short, honours even.

Now, the Indians should maintain this momentum between now and the WC to be able to put up a good showing there.

Absolutely, Indian team must do it. We will all be waiting for that day when this team brings home the WC. Lots more to prove and lots more to do.

I have no doubt that they have the potential to win it, however whether they can string together 9 good games (6 group games of which 4 (Eng-Zim-Pkn-Aus) are possible defeats, 3 Super Six games, Semi and Final) is a different question.

I like that. If they are possible defeats, they can also be possible victories, can't they? If you are looking at chances in those group games, I would say, 80-20 against Zim, 60-40 against Eng, 50-50 against Pak and 30-70 against Aus. Not too bad, is it?

From recent showings and perception I'd say:
For India:
60-40 against Zimbabwe
75-25 against England
50-50 against Pakistan (note: a brilliant bowling side against our batsmen could go some way in blunting our advantage)
50-50 against Australia (we have been playing our best cricket against this team for a while. Sachin, Yuvaraj, Laxman to the fore! And pray that they keep selecting Warne ;) )

:D

On paper though, for India:
80-20 Zim
60-40 Eng
40-60 Pak
30-70 Aus

At any rate, I'd back India to beat any of the three other teams widely expected to reach the semis- SA, Aus Pak!
In South African Conditions, I wouldn't necessarily back them to beat SA or Aus.

I'd say (considering the conditions)

80-20 vs. Zim
56-44 vs. England
65-35 vs. Pakistan
33-67 vs. Aus

How did you come up with such a precise calculation as 56-44, 65-35 and 33-67? That's cool!:D

56-44 - I think India have the upper hand but not as much as 60-40 owing to the conditions

65-35 - Pak are in turmoil at the moment.

33-67 - I'd take Aus to win 2 out 3 if they were playing in SA conditions.

Not a significant difference between 60-40 and 56-44(why not 55-45 or 57-43 while you are at it) and 33-67 and 30-70. As for Pak, they are in turmoil at the moment, but after the Aus series, they might get their act right. A full-strength Pak team at their fighting best would have an edge over India, but I considered the current turmoil and averaged it out to 50-50.

Somehow, in recent times we've played better against Aus than anyone else (there are so many players who play their best cricket against Aus), and with SA it's 50-50. We've always beaten Pak in WCs. Crow Crow!
Against Aus,India have won just 3 onedayers and lost 7 in the last 10 onedayers, so that is hardly a good record.Perhaps u had test matches in mind.

Just personal opinion - the only one we vastly disagree on is the Pakistan game, and you're bound to agree with Anil rather than me on that one bearing in mind what we each said!

So his assertion that he thought Pakistan would beat India is "reasonable" is it compared to me thinking India will beat Pakistan.

Only clearing the perception that being a pakistani doesn't automatically mean that whenever the word Pakistan is mentioned in a match column, I will go up shouting. Not bound to do that only because my loyalties are known around here.

Originally i was talking about the precise odds you attempted to give out.

England's chances

The interesting thing is that English fans have stopped talking about England's chances in the WC.I guess they have finally realised that England have no chance atll of winning the cup.
