Are you sure you used > (greater than) correctly? If so, I find it strange that you rate Gavaskar and Hutton ahead of Hobbs who you say is in the same company of Sobers and Sachin. If I was rating those five it would be

Hobbs > Sobers > Tendulkar >> Hutton > Gavaskar

Hobbs in the same company of Sobers and Sachin in terms of expert opinion.

For me,
Gavaskar > Sobers > Sachin > Hutton > Hobbs.

Actually Hutton is the least talked about Super ATG batsman i think. His reputation never went beyond " World's best batsman of his generation. "
Cricket world celebrated Bradman, Grace, Gavaskar, Sobers, Sachin, Lara, Viv, Pollock, Hobbs, Headley, Hammond, Ranji, Trumper, and Barry more.

Opinion isn't necessarily fact. However, ranking players can never be listed as "FACT" unless using arbitary measure such as batting averages. Even then comparing averages on face value is flawed.

Hutton played for Yorkshire and Gavaskar's similar issues are well documented on this forum. Both have questions to answer, so it's Hobbs by default.

To rate him above Hobbs/Hutton is swimming against the tide of expert opinion. I've said before that Gavaskar is worthy of ATG status but plenty of polls and surveys in other threads have rated him below Hutton and Hobbs.

Hobbs has the clear consensus as the greatest opener. But I'm not sure Hutton is considered better than gavaskar by an overwhelming majority, if at all. I've seen more than a few lists that place gavaskar higher and older players XIs often including Gavaskar at Hutton's expense.

If I were to remove all of India's top-middle order batsmen it would reduce their average to about fifteen and still wouldn't prove anything.

Unless you do it post-2020 and then the team average would actually shoot up

Just to comment on the era averages. One reason the 50s has such a low average is that New Zealand's batting was utterly dire in that decade. They averaged less than 20 per wicket. Exclude them and Pakistan in their debut decade, and the overall average goes up to over 30. That said, it is Australia's lowest-averaging decade post WW1, with only 1970s getting close, and it's England's secon lowest-averaging decade. The current one is the lowest and has plenty of time to change. Though the 50s are about equal with the 1980s and 1910s.

Yeah not really sure if Hutton is better than Gavaskar per “expert opinion”. Hobbs is usually a lock while others aren’t.

nothing wrong with thinking Hutton > Gavaskar but don’t present it based on general consensus.. It’s clearly not.
