Highlights of the games

Personal highlights from the bits you saw?

For me, the incredible performances included Jessica Fox and Nicolas Gestin in the canoe slaloms and Grace Brown in the women's road time trial; Duplantis in the pole vault- so far ahead of the competition so deserve HMs but Marchand's double gold in the pool sets a new standard in an event full of remarkable standards. The crowd cheering his every stroke in the breaststroke final was awesome.

Some amazing battles in the athletics but both those 1500m races were scintillating, as was the men's 800m.

Others - Andy Murray and Dan Evans making Olympic tennis interesting for a few days; Max Whitlock's fairwell; Dupont driving France to the 7s and Steph Curry's amazing final two minutes in the basketball final.

Leon ****ing Marchand.

Keeley in the 800m.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levone in the 400m hurdles. Other than Bolt I don't think I've ever seen someone dominate a sprint event so comprehensively.

Men's 1500m final.

Armand Duplantis.

Femke Bol's lap in the 4x400m mixed relay final.

Sifan Hassan's marathon finish.

I'm obviously massively biased towards the athletics, but I've loved watching sports like swimming, diving, gymnastics and rowing as well; but even the other sports like climbing (no idea what the event was) have proven that as long as there's something at stake, I'll watch just about any sport going.

At times it's genuinely like being back in my childhood before we got Sky where the Olympics and events like the Athletics World Championships were some of the major TV sporting events I remember. I've loved these games in a way I didn't think a cynical adult me would; I'm going to miss these games and as someone who watched close to **** all of Rio (I think possibly only Farah and Bolt winning gold) and none of Tokyo I didn't think that would happen.

A few of my favourite moments of the Games, in no particular order:

  • Andy Murray and Dan Evans saving 5 consecutive match points to keep Murray's career alive
  • Tom Pidcock's comeback in the mountain biking
  • Screaming at the television as Alex Yee came back to win gold in the triathlon after looking nowhere close
  • Any type of mixed relay
  • Leon Marchand being a star in the pool, and the French crowd blowing the roof off every time
  • Dominant athletes showing that they are the best (Ledecky, Biles, Jess Fox, McLaughlin-Levrone, Duplantis, and so many more)
  • The number of close finishes - in particular 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m 400m, 1500m, but so many more throughout the whole Games
  • Bryony Page being so delighted to win gold
  • The kayak cross as a whole
  • Being able to see people in here enjoying events they've never even heard of before
  • An Olympic medal for KJT
God the Olympics is the best
Copying over from the other thread, plus:

  • Chinese divers being absolute machines
  • Seeing so many Team GB athletes at proably their last games, who have given so many good memories in the past (Whitlock, Peaty, KJT et al)
  • The BBC punditry as a whole has been excellent. Sure they've probably been on the screen more than might be ideal but Laura Kenny, Chris Hoy, Rebecca Adlington, Mark Foster, Denise Lewis, Michael Johnson, JEH and so on have all been incredible

Tom Daly’s knitting creations

Duplantis World Record

The skill in the table tennis

The Men’s Football Final

The magical horse running on the Seine

Also the hilarity of the boat trip with the Olympic flame that they sent Nadal , Serena Williams and others on

Actually shout out to the Chinese bloke (yeah he's probably doped up) who won the 100m freestyle by smashing the world record. In a slow pool it was a brilliant swim.

The athletics in general has generally been a ****ing astonishing standard. The amount of athletes running huge PBs to not win gold (or in some events even medals) has been amazing.

Agree with furball. Watched Beijing and London religiously but struggled to get into Rio and can't remember a thing about Tokyo. This games has been really fun, the athletes have excelled in competition and on the sidelines with their attitude and cameraderie.

On that, watching a re-run of the last diving finals and the Aussie bloke goes absolutely wild at the quality of the Japanese bloke's final dive despite the fact that it lost him a medal. It was lovely to see.

Been loads of lovely moments like that with the field events and in the gymnastics notably as well.

British and French bloke who medalled in the 50m freestyle celebrating together another great example.

Loads of that in the climbing and skateboarding as well.

Another random one - whenever I saw Marchand on the podium there was a Frenchman in the crowd behind in a stripey black and white shirt.

And Snoop Dogg everywhere genuinely living his best life

I genuinely loved the camaraderie between competitors in the skateboarding. Was just fantastic.

Biles GOATing it up was amazing too. Likewise the Algerian woman winning in the boxing after being vilified for a fortnight.

from an Aus perspective the BMX gold after her brother had suffered a career ending injury was extra special.

oh, and long after everything else at these Games is forgotten, people will still be talking
