Given how pretty much every specialist England test batter who's debuted since Root has at least had extended periods of sucking arse when they haven't been binned off as not of the requisite standard completely, I'm far more inclined to savour the ride than analyse the joy out of it.

That said I don't think even the Brook family would've seen a start like this.

Harry Brook has the same number of away hundreds in the last 3 months as the entire Australia team in the last 3 years
That can't be right. Uzzie made 3 in Pak and smith + marnus both made 1 in Sri Lanka, right? Even if uzzie only made two in Pak that's even in the past 9 months.

I was intrigued enough to have a wee Google about Benaud jr. and AJL Hill 'cos their records look like they were mildly stiffed to only get the three tests each.

Obviously the teeny sample sizes lend themselves to anomalies, and it turns out Richie's kid bro took only 3 other wickets in his entire first-class career and Arthur Hill was on Lord Hawke's 1895/96 tour to South Africa that retrospectively were given test status. Those three tests were his entire test career.

Not to mention their rugby league players. Joe Westerman really took this to extreme levels recently.

One of the times I actually feel for English sports fans - they invented so many sports and have ended up being beaten by so many other countries at them.

Well, I couldn't not Google that, obvz.

I'm assuming that was the sex act (with a woman who's not his wife, as one site rather too enthusiastically reports) caught on video that subsequently went viral?

I'd say, what with Castleford being a small place and him being what passes for a celebrity up there, his decision to, y'know, in public wasn't solid.

Would you expect someone who invents a game to happen to also be the most capable player of the game in the world?

It's remarkable really, not only that the British invented or were instrumental in the development of so many of the worlds leading sports and games, but that they remain competitive at world level in playing them.

If you include inventing games and playing them, the Brits have got to be far and away the greatest sporting nation in history, or at the very least since the Romans.

Didn't stop him turning out against the Black and Whites the following weekend, so I think we can assume the Tigers' coach is a pragmatist.

He complained about him getting sledged in the crowd and the media talking about it so much instead of the rugby league itself, in fact!
