Group B - Pakistan, England, Netherlands

Right, so Pakistan need to win by 24 runs. I fancy Netherlands will chase if at all possible- if Pakistan score 150, they can set themselves 126 to qualify. Let's hope so anyway, because otherwise the maths becomes impossibly difficult.

Impossibly difficult was the last day of the WCQ. This is peanuts.

Thanks, I liked that super 8 format, now it really makes the last round meaningless if teams already qualified i.e SA v NZ.
Good point actually. Never thought of that at all.

I don't actually think England played much better here than they did against Netherlands. Pakistan just played far, far worse than the Dutch did.

fielded worse for one...

wouldve been a diffrent game if Pakistan held on to their catches and didnt misfield.

Haha but for the last day of the WCQ the awkward maths was unlikely to play a role (don't remember the exact scenario, but it was something like if Afghanistan beat Kenya by 120+ runs then the cat's amongst the pigeons, otherwise it's all fine). Here it's extremely likely to play a part.

Scored more and conceded fewer. Must be something of a step up, surely? Even allowing for the fielding freebies from Pakistan.

Liked the balance of the team more too; Key down the order can only be a safety measure in case we jizz up early. Has to go in first up if we play. Morgan essentially a Collingwood-esque nurdler too. Prettier but unlikely to pick the pace up.

Basically, Pakistan need to chase in 17 overs (assuming a total of around 140). Lower totals give them less time - around 17 runs per ball - and the score on the final ball may also matter: if they score a four on the final ball, they can afford an extra three deliveries.

I've made a spreadsheet. I'm a loser, i know. Let me know if i've made any errors. Seems about right.

Haha. Join the club. :p

I have to download 28 megs on a poor connection for a compatibility pack to check it, though, which I'm not quite up to doing.

I'll get to the end of this one on a note of humour. At the end of the game the affable Jonathan Agnew, who had earlier recounted some complimentary comments about matches he'd played in Holland, rushed madly into the field to grab anyone in orange who'd talk to him. He announced breathlessly that he had with him Karl van Bunge and proffered the usual inane questions that these occasions demand.
he reply came in uncertain and broken English, and was interrupted halfway through when Aggers interjected apologetically "Oh...... I'm Jonathan Agnew from the BBC by the way". Clearly Karl had no idea who this madman was who was accosting him! Nice one Daan.

Was that Rashid's loopy leggies would get smashed. But he has solid variety, so for once gotta give those selectors some cricket.

Jeez, reading through this thread was depressing. Feeling all chuffed after our win, yet to read through you'd have think English stumps had been flying throughout our innings!

We were good, clinical. There were some points for improvement - we should have scored more, went a bit too quiet at one point. But generally it's hard to be critical, we batted well, bowled well and on the whole fielded well.

Would have given MOTM to KP, but Wright was deserving in a way, Broad did well as well. Also, Jimmeh is just the man, he went at a decent econ, and even when the game was over you could see how pissed off he was at going for any runs - that's the attitude we need.

Anyway, hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Nasser asked some very good questions of Pietersen, and I love how frank Pietersen was. "We should never, ever lose to Netherlands. We should wallop them every time." While some may see that as disrespectful, I don't think it was meant in that way. It really was refreshing. Had the footballers lost to Kazakhstan last night, you imagine you wouldn't have heard similar comments from them. Indeed I read it that if Michael Owen was asked his thoughts on Josef Fritzl he would say, "well you know, it is hard being a Dad these days." Brutal honesty the way forwards, Pietersen was clearly pissed off that we lost on Friday. Love the guy, want his babies.

Well played England, will be supporting the Dutch on Tuesday as they don't deserve to go out, pakistan do on the basis of what I saw today

Crap performance from Pakistan, yet again. They won't be beating Netherlands by a large margin, they are going home.

What happens if Netherlands bats first?
