A lot of pundits have said that, but as usual the media vendetta will overlook that.

To put it into context, Paraguay played Argentina and Brazil home and away in qualifying, and lost only 1 of those 4 games, whilst only conceding 1 goal in total.

Bit of a lacklustre performance by England. While I cannot profess to know much on soccer, the great start should've resulted in a 3-0 or 4-0 result , but for 87 minutes of failure to score is a bit odd.

I hope they can raise their game as they progress thru the opening round of group matches .

I was concerned they'd get a penalty courtesy of the number 13 - the biggest cheat I've seen in a long time.
yeh for sure, i think he knew he was gonna get away with murder out there as it was obvioius the ref wasnt going to call fouls against them...

I'm pretty sure they settled for 1-0 pretty early on, in saying that i dont think they stop trying to score goals but they knew they could rely on the defence to keep a clean sheet, imo England will warm to it in the tournament and a slow start as long as they win will prolly wont bother Sven.

Correct me if I am wrong but Brazil beat Paraguay 4-1, last year. Whilst Argentina lost in Asunción last September in a game which was nothing more than a farce, Argentina had already qualified and it is pretty well known that both teams were going to **** over Uruguay from the outset.

Also bringing up such scores is rather redundant do you not think?
England lost to Northern Ireland, what is the meaning of such a defeat and what are the connotations if anyone beats Northern Ireland, not many.

England never really looked that likely to concede IMO. Terry and Ferdinand covered everything pretty well and the only way I thought the Paraguayans would score was if they got a close free kick or penalty (you can be thankful Crouch isn't a defender the way he was getting pinged!).

Still, if that's the way England are going to play this tournament - score an early goal and then sit back for 75+ minutes - expect a typical quarter final exit.

Nope.

They beat them 1-0 and drew 0-0
Paraguay beat Argentina 1-0 and drew 0-0.

Thus suggestiong they're not quite the pushovers expected.

All the abuse that football "fans" gave Trinidad and Tobago leading into this World Cup was worth it. It fired the boys up.

0-0 vs Sweden... that'll do.

Shaka Hislop deserves a medal of sorts. He pulled off a handful of the best saves we may see in this entire tournament.

Chilavert blasts 'worst ever' England

Jose Luis Chilavert has criticised Paraguay's display against an England side he describes as the "worst in history".

The former Paraguay goalkeeper believes Anibal Ruiz's men should have salvaged at least a draw as England wilted in the Frankfurt heat on Saturday afternoon. Carlos Gamarra's third-minute own goal, which came via a trademark David Beckham free-kick, was all that separated the two sides, but Chilavert insists Paraguay's players lacked the mental strength when it really mattered.

The 40-year-old said: "They lost against probably the worst English national team in their history. The Paraguayan players did not have enough attitude."

Poor man, the Coke has gone to his head, he must have failed to remember some of the England teams of the 90's.

We usually start pretty slowly. The players are fine it's the tactics that concern me, regardless of the heat factor we gave too much ground too early in the second half.

Still, we got the points which is all that matters in the first match, ask Sweden if they'd swap performances with us.

Personally I found it odd you would have Paraguagy whose first language is Español, and have a ref who is from Mexico who speaks the same idioma (language) as them and you have a captain who in theroy (if he isn't as lazy as Veron) should know some Spanish (if not speak fluently).

Or the last side who failed to qualify for the last World Cup? :-O

Ok let me re-phase - what about the last England side who failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Why I put 'last' World Cup in I don't know, forgot to check my post (too busy doing a CW-related project that is).

Ah, that makes more sense. Yeah, we were crap in '93. :(

We should have qualified with the players available. Le Tissier was ignored, as was Anderton, while superstars like Carlton Palmer were embraced. The talent was definitely there for England to qualify for USA 94 ahead of Norway, but twasn't to be.

But the team we put out, twas pretty bad, to be nice, and Chilavert ought to remember that side before he calls this one the worst in history!

trying to find somewhere that will give me access to some England line-ups from this period but I can't find any. Like a statsguru for Football. Anyone know of one?
