Considering we’ve done better than normal in the last two major tournaments expectation appears to be quite low.
Recent form has been poor and I guess the climate is not one you would expect us to thrive in. I think we’ll do okay but am tipping one of the South American giants to win.

Throw in the weaknesses at the back and the mediocre form of some of our regular starters, and you can see why people are claiming not to be fussed this time around. Unusual times insofar as lots of English folks would like to see Argentina win due to the Messi factor. I doubt whether that's happened before.

This is not a phenomenon I've had experience of, happily. Although most of my football watching confreres are of similar vintage to me, so they remember 1986 all too well.

Can truthfully say there's no team I'd like to see win it less.

My umbrage on 1986 was always directed at the match officials rather than Maradona. Can't blame a man for trying to get away with something, but you can blame match officials for being ****ing incompetent. I may have felt differently if it happened during my formative years, but I was under no illusions about the fairness of life by then.

Now Leon in 1970 is a whole different story. No wonder the young folk have a more sensible attitude towards the German football team than I do.

Even so, I'm strangely unexcited about this -- it should be huge, today's the first time in my life (62 and counting ftr) that I've had my own team to cheer for at a WC, but somehow it's all a bit, meh really.

I reckon it will kick in once they're actually playing. Talking of Wales and 1958, one of my claims to fame is that I used to teach Terry Medwin's grand-son. Or perhaps it was his great grand-son.
