A lot of football's rules are unwritten and you just pick up a sense of what is or isn't a red from watching it. But you can get a red for either:

1. Excessive force or brutality when challenging for the ball
2. Denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity with a foul or handball

And I thought this one was a very rare example of a red card for both reasons.
Speaking of unwritten rules, an outfield player would have seen red there without the need for VAR to intervene. Goalkeepers get away with shite challenges all the time.

And they are over-protected in terms of contact with them too

Just done some Maths, could be faulty but I am pretty sure that even with a draw tonight the only way England could then go out would be losing to Wales by four goals.

A win tonight and the group is pretty much won. This does worry me though, I'd rather obliterate Wales (sorry @nick-o )

Wales need to be destroyed, it's the only acceptable result.

What was that keeper doing, complete brain snap
Hennessy's never been the sharpest tool in the box judging by his previous exploits. But yes, today's effort was spectacular by any standards. A real Schumacher, without being able to rely on inept refereeing to let him off the hook.

EDIT
Actually the refereeing was inept until VAR intervened, wasn't it.

Completely forgotten about that.

Must be a noted dullard to be able to plausibly claim he didn't know what a Nazi salute was.
