not really my opinion, I've seen people rate it that way or completely discard them by saying it's runs against a second string west Indies lineup, personally I rate it similar to Compton vs South Africa in 48 or Weekes's runs against India, B team bashing but not minnow like 2000s Bangladesh/1930s New Zealand or 1980s Sri Lanka.
This is Donald Trump speak. 'I've heard people say...' , so there is credibility to a bad opinion.

(it's about to be 9 here soon) so Yeah it's not my view, I simply identified as one of the reasons one may not have Gavaskar over Chappell, because Chappell faced a superior West Indies by a very large margin.

Saying Chappell faced better WI bowlers is fine. Dismissing Sunny's performances against the WI is not.

How is Gavaskar in 1979 the same as Hammond flattening a club standard early era minnow NZ? Ridiculous comparison. Even if you want to discount Marshall because he was early career, that WI team still had Sylvester Clarke, who was very quick and was rated as a very tough bowler to face by lots of batsmen of that era despite not having a long career. To say runs against them are comparable to Hammond's against no name NZ scrubs (because the vast majority of those runs didn't even come against Cowie) is absurd.
What even is Marshall’s excuse for being ass in the Indian tests in 1978/79?

In the West Indies season immediately prior he took 25 @ 16.04 in 4 matches.

On the Indian tour he took 34 @ 13.29 in the 6 non test matches. Clearly he was in excellent form.

Had been playing FC for only a year and wasn't even picked consistently in India, his Windies form can be chalkes down to poor quality of batting he got to feast on from Jamaica and Karnataka, that's kind of the problem with Marshall, he was really only top class ATG from 83-91, and he might've declined after that.

This is just stupid and makes a mockery of anyone that lived during the 1970's. Greg Chappell was a far better bat and arguably #1 in the 1970's as far better than Viv Richards then. Doesn't make Gavaskar any less of a great though but #3 easily.

You people re-writing history should just accept you don't know anything about 20th century cricket other than manipulating some random stats to decide who was best

You have Chappell>Viv>Gavaskar?

reasoning?
Gavaskar's averages outside the subcontinent aren't an accurate reflection of how he did against the better attacks, and Chappell was definitely a very good player of spin despite the lack of games in Asia.

Greg's WSC work was outstanding as well.
