Viv wins this one by a landslide as he rightly should. This poll would have been more interesting if we are discussing the second greatest ODI player of all time.

most people would say Sachin or Wasim(rightly so). Fourth greatest would be interesting. I’d say McGrath at 4, Dhoni at 5, Pollock at 6, followed by AB and Kohli. Kohli will break into top 4, if he performs well this WC, and continues his to average 57+ till the next 3-4 years, crossing Tendulkar‘s century record. His ridiculous ability to churn centuries and chasing ability would put him neck and neck with Viv(as a batsmen only) then.

If Kohli perform well in this WC, then he eclipses Tendulkar completely.

Likewise if Starc performs well this WC again, he too will get pretty close to top 5.

Batting, bowling, fielding, captaincy . . . even after the best batsmen retiring from side was phenomenal.

Kohli cant catch Viv even if he has an epic world cup. He's played 3 of them and not even finished in the top 10 runscorers once. Massive fail tbh.
Even Viv failed as a batter in first WC. I’m not saying that Kohli will be equal to Viv in WCs if he dominates one this year, but he hasn’t been an outright failure either. Could have scored lot more last WC, if openers didn’t play out the first 20-25 overs. Also WC record isn’t a make or break completely, unless Kohli doesn’t dominate this year as well.

Doing well in one WC atleast is kind of a box to tick. If Kohli will catch Viv, it will be because he is ahead of his competition in century accumulation and chasing outrightly. However certainly he should be ranked equal to Sachin if dominates this WC and provided he doesn’t have a downfall.

the thread isnt just about world cups though even with modern jamodi tax Kohli’s done some extraordinary things and if he stars in a world cup win he will have 2 trophies to his name

I love Kapil and my admiration for him only grew further after watching 83 movie. But he averages 23 even including 40 not outs in 225 innings with one big not out century too. That is almost Afridi level with bat and definitely not an ideal no.7. A very good no.7 though. An ideal no.7 is Lance Klusenar who averages 40 plus with bat at a great strike rate and can also bowl 10 overs.
Kapil was a better batsman than Afridi + ATVG bowler.

Thats good enough to be rated as arguable GOAT ODI Cricketer.

Also, if you check the rankings,
Kapil is the best ODI Batsman and easily the best bowler for in India in 80s.

Kapil's batting avg was 27 or 28 in 80s ( comparable to Klusner's career length ) with a Strike rate of 105, thats like averaging 30 at 140 sr in 90s.
And Klusner was not an ATG batsman, 40 avg at 90sr would have earned him the reputation of 2nd best batsman in the world. But thats not the case, because 40 avg was inflated by not outs ( Same with Kapil) I consider Kapil to be a 30 avg batsman in real terms and Klusner a 35 avg batsman. ( after adjusting era and strike rates for their peak 10 years )

But Kapil Dev played in the 90's and averaged 17 with the bat at a SR in the 70's

2nd best ODI bat for me is Ponting. He was a monster & truly clutch.
Shane Bond's bunny was an amazing player but imo Sachin and ABDV are no 2 & 3 in ODIs. It is very close between G Chappell, Jones, M Waugh, Bevan, Ponting, Gilchrist, and Hussey to choose Australia's greatest ODI bat.

For clutch factor & domination of top attacks, I would take Ponting over anyone but Viv in ODIs. Best player of pace I've ever seen [since Viv].
