Greatest individual limited overs knock in history

The Great One

Cricket Spectator
Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards. 189 no at Old Trafford around 1984. WI were 9 for 160 when last man Michael Holding joined him. Richards went from 80 when Holding joined him to 189 no. Holding faced 16 balls. I was working in England at that point and was at the ground. I couldn’t believe the power and control that Richards had. Second. best and by a long way was Michael Bevan’s knock at the scg against the WI.

Whatever it takes!!!
De Silva coz he was the first one to do it chasing on the big stage and they lost openers very cheaply and 100 in 240 chase is pretty amazing even then.

It was a top knock but Australian bowling was pretty off color and the dew factor played pretty heavily that day. Gurusinha and Ranatunga were actually more aggressive than De Silva in knocking the Aussies back. Without the dew it would have been a far tighter final, though I think Sri Lanka would still have won. But it is true, the pressure was still there.

Thinking about it, would be nice to have a poll over the best ton in a World Cup final, as Lloyd in 75 and Richards in 79 were also top knocks.

Dew has been part of day night cricket for a while at that point and yet it was the first time someone chose to chase in a big game. And they were 2 down for nothing and Gurusinha was anything but aggressive. De Silva chased it down with the kind of clinical efficiency you almost never expect from a SC side, especially one that was as inexperienced as that SL line up. Like I said, I have not seen better in that stage since. Closest would be Stokes in 2019 but that dusty finish means its hard to call it "match winning".

Lloyd in 1975 - Coming at 50/3, Scoring 102 off 85 balls off Lillee, Gilmor and peak Thomson in a World Cup final - why doesnt this get talked about more?

the world's best batsman in test cricket was thrown a serious challenge in an ODI by the word's best fast bowling attack. and he rose to the occasion, put his "body and soul in the firing line" and produced a masterclass for the ages.

Gurusinha was only aggressive against Warne. That also took some sledging from Warne to happen. Ranatunga did very much same, but he is good as any ODI batsman you could have in the era, Left handars taking on Warne was the plan altogether. There was Tillekaratne to come, who has taken some penchant to Warne in 95-96 tour as well. Aravinda not taking on Warne was the plan from ball one. That whole WC campaign was a master plan.

DeSilva was harsh against Warne in the beginning of the innings though.

If we're counting gully cricket format, Samuels in 2012 final and Kohli vs Australia in 2016 also up there.
Yeah that Kohli T20 innings, hitting yorkers wide outside the off stump for fours to deep square. Possibly hit his skill peak that year when you factor in the unreal IPL season he had in that edition.

Coventry made 194 and equaled Anwar's record...in the second innings, Tamim Iqbal blasted 158 and saw Bangladesh home to victory.

An epic match.
