In a way you are doing the same , Symonds not even close to Dhoni , Lara or Ponting as a batsman, and his secondary skill will not be needed most of the times when you have 5 better bowlers and 2 part timers .


Azharudin - India's best fielder in last 30 years imo. Selection justified.

I dont even know what you're trying to argue. I am picking Symonds in an all time XI because he's justified as a power hitter, decent bowling option and the best fielder of all time. Adds a heap to any ODI team.

Azhar over Kohli is a million times more stupid that Symonds over Dhoni/Lara as a middle order hitter and all rounder, particularly if you've already got Bevan in the side (and therefore don't need or want Dhoni).

And having an extra bowling option definitely helps a captain win games. Murali got hit for 90 runs for no wickets in a game. Don't you think his captain might have considered switching to a part timer for a couple of overs instead of continuing bowling Murali that game?

In such rare occasions , you go for part timers like Sachin or Viv. It happens only once in 10 matches.
It's like selecting kallis and Botham above Garner and McGrath after losing a match by 20 runs with 5 overs to spare.
