Ahh SJS, I agree with you on Richards, however...

Quite a few players have S/Rs over 90.1 among players scoring 500 runs or more:
Shahid Afridi - 103.33
Smith, I D S - 99.43
Powell, R L - 98.20
Kapil Dev - 95.07
Sehwag, V - 94.59
Gilchrist, A C - 94.12
Flintoff, A - 92.67
Symonds, A - 90.86
Richards, I V A - 90.09

Of course none of these players are anywhere near Richards... yet!
Perhaps you meant 5000 runs?
I think Kapil Dev can hold his head high! :D

Uh hum, Mr Bevan.

Yes of course. Bevan scored 6912 at an amazing 53.6.(st. rate 74.2)

Only two other players average marginally above Richards but both have scored less than 300 runs.
Zaheer Abbas 2572 at 47.6 (strike rate of 84.8) remarkable for the times in which he played.

Ram Naresh Sarwan has 2342 at 47.8 (st. rate 79.0) in his incomplete career so far.

Don't worry, i'm just happy in the knowledge that your cricket knowledge does hold some bounds. :p

So am I. :D

Bevan's record is amazing isn't it.

233 matches, 196 innings, 67 not outs, 6912 runs, a strike rate of 74.16 and an average of 53.58.

I think any 'best of' ODI with both Bevan and Viv in it would be an awesome sight to behold.

SJS you scare me sometimes :p

My view on the greatest ever ODI batsmen (I stress the term 'my') is as follows.

- Viv Richards
- Sachin Tendulkar
- Michael Bevan

Those 3, are in my opinion inseperable. Sachin and Bevan have played different, yet equally important roles for their teams. They're both brilliant at what they do, and deserve their spot. And there is NO WAY you could base who was better by man of the match performances. For a very long time, India relied on Sachin to win games, and if he didn't perform they'd lose. So of course, if he scores a big one, India would win and he'd get the MotM. Bevan was in a team of excellent bowlers and immensely talented top order batsmen. His 50s and 40s from as many balls often won Australia the game, yet other batsmen or bowlers received MotM. Even recently, World Cup 2003 against England, and the TVS cup final against India. Both performances were match winning (granted he had Bichel in the WC).

Do I even need to explain why Viv Richards is there? Absolute greatness. The master of the ODI game in a period when it was not as popular, and where runs didn't come quite as easily. He deserves his spot with Bevan and Sachin, and you can argue until we're all 80 years old as to who is the better of the 3.

After those unquestionable 3 I have others in no order:

- Brian Lara
- Dean Jones
- Aravinda de Silva
- Mark Waugh
- Saeed Anwar
- Ricky Ponting

Those are based on what I have personally seen, and what I know. If I haven't seen enough of players in the past that have large averages and so on, I'm not going to put them on my list simply because the stats say so, as I am unaware of how 'great' these batsmen were.

Everyone feel free to yell abuse at me but I really dont see how anyone can rate Ganguly in the top 5 or even 10..

especialy lately in ODI's he has done nothing at all.

Maybe he would not figure into everyones list. But why should current form have anything to do with figuring in an all time list ?

ok maybe not current form but I cant think of him doing much at all in the last 3 years other than against the really week teams.

In no particular order.

Viv Richards
Sachin Tendulkar.
Brian Lara.
Dean Jones.
Mark waugh.
Michael Bevan.

I think these guys really stand out from the rest in their own special way,not neccesarily statistically which is sometimes an erroneous barometer.

Since June 2001 Ganguly has scored 3096 runs @ 40.02, including centuries against South Africa, England and Australia. Not the most spectacular record but its still an average of 1000 runs per season so we shouldn't write him off just yet.
